“This ain’t good, Rick.” Bob said once Colleen and Missy had left. The three of them were walking behind Mrs. Nichols and Jase.

“JR’s going to be alright. We have to keep thinking that.” Kerri told her soon-to-be brother-in-law.

              “I’m talking about Colleen.”

“I know...I know...We’ll get the Nichols to talk her into going to therapy.” Rick told his brother.  “Look, this needs to be reported to the police. We can’t let whoever did this get away with it.”

“They’re on the way, Marilyn called them when she got here. I’m going to go get Amy and Aunt Katie. I’ll meet you guys up there.” Jase said as they all waited for the elevator.

“Bob, didn’t he say he doesn’t recall what exactly happened?” Rick asked once Jase left and they were all in the elevator.

              “What are you thinking, Rick?”

“I’m thinking that maybe we should get the press involved.” Bob stated flatly.

“Let’s talk to the police first kids, then we’ll go from there.” Marilyn Nichols told them.

“Marilyn, kids? Any word?” Aunt Katie asked as she, Amy, and Jase came into the waiting room a little while later.

“No. They just rolled him into surgery. Colleen and Missy should be back any moment with some pizza.” Kerri replied. Bob was sitting in a corner chair, head back, eyes closed.

“Bobby?” Aunt Katie asked as she sat down beside him.

              “Yes.” He replied.

              “Are you okay?”

“Just drained, Auntie. I’ll be okay once we get news on JR.” Bob said with his eyes still closed. He was picturing Missy on the porch swing with him right before Halloween.

“Bob? Missy and Colleen are on their way up with the pizza. Snap out of wherever you went.” Rick told his brother a half hour later.

“Any word on JR?’ Bob asked, his eyes still closed.

              “Not yet.” Rick replied.

“Nourishment has arrived.” Missy said trying to sound upbeat as she and Colleen entered the room.

“Bob, the police are here too.” Rick said. Bob opened his eyes.

“Detectives McFadden and McNeal. Good to see you.” Bob stated.

“Hello Bob. Mrs. Nichols reported a beating?” Charlie McFadden stated.

“Yeah, my brother JR was beaten up pretty badly last night. He’s in surgery right now.” Bob said as Charlie sat down next to him. Missy let Rick and Bob talk with the Detectives and concentrated on making sure everyone else had something to eat and drink.

“You’ll call us when your brother is able to talk?” Detective McFadden asked Bob.

“Yes, detective, one of us will call you. Thanks for coming by.”

“We were asked to take this case, Bob. Missy’s mom asked for us. We want to make sure you and Missy are okay and that your family is as well. Missy looks a hundred percent healthy now.”

“She’s getting there, Charlie. You can talk to her tomorrow. Okay?” Bob said as they stood up.

“That’s fine. I’ll call in the morning before I come over. Rick.”

“Detectives.” Bob said. He sat back down on the chair and put his head in his hands.

              “Bob?” Rick asked

“I’m okay.” Bob insisted. Missy came over with some pizza and soda.

“Here, guys. Eat something.” Missy said to both of them.

              Several hours later...

“JR’s in recovery...” Kevin Nichols announced when he entered the waiting room.

“How is he?” Amy immediately asked as Missy’s father sat down next to Amy and Colleen.

“Well, he looks worse than his injuries are. We had to put a pin in his cheek bone and we removed the crushed rib and repaired the others. It’s gonna take an hour or two for him to come out of the anesthesia, and then we’ll start him on other meds to minimize the pain.” he explained.

“Can I sit with him?” Amy asked. Kevin looked at Bob, Rick, and Colleen. Bob nodded that it was okay.

“Sure. Colleen? What about you?” Mr. Nichols asked her.

“If it’s alright.” Colleen asked as she hugged Mr. Nichols.

“You bet.” Amy and Colleen followed Mr. Nichols as everyone gathered around. Bob and Rick turned to look at Missy and Kerri.

“You two are remarkable.” Bob said.

“Who? Us? We didn’t do anything.” Missy insisted.

“You both kept Amy and Colleen calm and their spirits up, Missy brought food and drinks and you gave us space.” Rick pointed out.

              “You needed it.” Kerri replied.

“Well, in any case. Thank you. Missy, how’s your back and leg?” Bob asked his wife.

“If I don’t think about them, then I’m fine.”

“Bull, you’ve been limping since you got back with the pizza.” Kerri said flatly.

“I took motrin and it’s helped.” Missy glared at her.

“Hey, no arguing, okay? Rick? Could you take Missy home for me? Your father would tell you to get off your leg young lady. I’ll call Kim and let her know what’s going on.” Bob asked.

              “Sure, Bob.” Rick said.

“Well, since I have an escort, I won’t argue, just don’t get too overworked about JR. Collie and Amy don’t need to see you upset. Save it for when you come home, okay?” Missy asked her husband.

              “I promise. Thanks.”

“No problem. Mom and Jase are talking with the other doctor outside, maybe you should go see what’s going on?” Missy told her husband.

              “I will. I love you.”

“Ditto. I’ll see you later.” Missy told him. Rick and Kerri had walked away from them and collected the trash around the room.

“Rick, she’s all yours. Take care of her for me.” Bob said to his brother.

“We’ll be fine.” Missy said. Missy, Rick, and Kerri said goodbye to Jase and Missy’s mom and headed home.

“Missy, honey. I’m home, wake up.” Bob said late that evening when he got home from the hospital. Kerri and Rick were downstairs in the rec room, sleeping on the futon.

              “How’s JR?”

“In a lot of pain. How are you? Rick said you came home and scrubbed the chair soaking wet.”

“It needed to be cleaned out. I didn’t want anyone else to do it.”

              “How’s your hamstring?”

“Not too bad. You look tired, come to bed.” Missy told him.

“After I check on the kids. Don’t go back to sleep yet, okay?” he asked.

“Alright.” Missy said. She turned on the light next to her and sat up in bed.

“JR is so mad at himself.” Bob said when he came back into their room.

              “Really?”

“Yeah. When he finally came to, he and I talked a little. He remembers telling Amy he was going back to the house for some clothes and driving to the pier but nothing afterwards. He doesn’t remember driving here or the conversation we all had with him in the rec room.” Bob sat down on the bed and took off his Jeans and sweatshirt.

“He’ll remember in a few days, hon...I know he will. Now, what about you? How are you doing?”

“I feel like my world is falling apart. Mom and dad are gone. We almost lost JR today.”

“What do you mean we almost lost him?”

“Kenny and your dad told me, Jase, and your mom that they had to take out part of a lung and JR’s spleen because of his injuries. He’s going to be in the hospital for about a month and in the meantime, Amy’s moving into our parents’ house.”

“This must be serious between them.”

“Serious enough that he asked her to marry him tonight.”

“Well, isn’t that great!” Missy asked as Bob got under the covers.

“Yeah it is, I’m just tired.” Bob said.

“Rest...you need rest...” Missy told him as he turned out the light..

“Yeah...I guess I do.” Bob said. “Come here, I want to hold you in my arms.” he said.

“No complaints from me.” Missy said. They fell asleep in each other’s arms.

“Okay, JR. We’re here. I’m warning you, the house is packed with Missy’s family and Amy’s as well as ours. If you’re not up for a party, I’ll take you back to my house.” Bob said to his brother as they pulled up to the house after JR’s release from the hospital a month later.

“No, it’s okay. A party is good. We need some fun again.” JR told his younger brother.

“As long as you don’t overdue it.” Missy told him.

              “Yes, ma’am.”

“Hey, if I didn’t say it, you know Bob or someone else will.” Missy teased.

              “Thanks, Missy.” JR smiled.

“I just have one more question, Jason.” Bob said as they sat in the car.

              “Are you nagging me?”

“No, I just wanted to know when the wedding is.”

“This weekend. I’m not waiting any longer. Life’s too short.” JR told him.

“That’s cool. You should know that Amy has fallen into the family fold really good. Kerri and I really like her.” Missy said.

“Good, I’m glad. Let’s get inside before everyone comes out here, okay?” JR said.

“Hi, honey. How are you?” Amy greeted them at the front porch.

“Rejuvenated. Missy’s got my prescriptions and before you ask, yes, my sides are sore and I need to sit.”

“Let’s get you into the house then.” Rick told his older brother. Rick and Bob helped Jason, Jr. into the family room.

“Hi Uncle Jason. I’ve missed you.” Jessie said. She was the first one to sit down next to him. Amy had to laugh.

“Oh, really. I’ve missed you too munchkin.” JR said. Jessie beamed.

The house was full of laughter and memories of Mr. and Mrs. Townsend and talk of JR’s and Amy’s wedding for the rest of the afternoon.

“Today was a good day.” Bob told Missy as they cleaned up the kitchen after most of the guests had left.

“Yes, it was. What do you say we take our kids and go home?” Missy said as she laid the dishtowel over the sink edge to dry.

“I think that is a good idea.” Bob answered her as he embraced her from behind.

“Let me go see if Matthew needs changed and then we can go.” Missy said. Amy and Kerri came into the kitchen.

“Wow, you guys really cleaned this place up good.” Kerri said as she looked around.

“Thanks, now we’re going home.” Missy said to both of them.

“So soon? Is everything alright?” Kerri asked.

“Everything’s fine. Bob’s really exhausted though and I think Matt’s got the beginnings of a cold.” Missy explained.

“Well, okay then. Thank you for coming today, for bringing JR home, and for finding the kitchen again.” Amy said and hugged them both. The phone rang. Kerri answered it.

              “Hello?”

“Kerri? It’s Kevin Nichols. Is Missy still there?”

“Yes, do you want to talk with her?”

              “Please?”

“Missy, it’s your dad.” Kerri handed Missy the phone. Bob whispered in her ear, “I’ll go get Matthew and Jessie.

              “Hi, daddy. What’s up?”

“I just got off the phone with the DA. He’s been trying to get a hold of you. JJ’s trial has been set to get underway tomorrow starting with Jury selection.” when Missy heard that she sat down on the nearest chair.

“Missy? What’s wrong?” Kerri asked. Missy waved Kerri off.

“When did he find out about this?”

“This morning. JJ’s lawyer petitioned the court to have the trial begin as soon as possible. There will be a news conference in less than an hour about it. Your house is bound to be crawling with reporters any time now.”

“Aw, daddy! I don’t want to go through this again. Can’t we get them to leave us alone?” Missy asked her father.

“I’ll ask the DA if there’s anything he can do about keeping them away from the house. In the meantime, talk to Bob and think about staying here.”

“Thanks daddy. But I can’t hide in a bubble forever. I gotta go and tell Bob what’s going on. We’ll call when we get home.” Missy said and hung up the phone before her father could say anything else.

“Missy, what’s going on?” Kerri asked.

“Not now Kerri.” Missy said and went up to Bob’s old bedroom to talk to him.

“What did your father want?” Bob asked as she closed the door behind her.

“JJ’s trial has been pushed up to begin tomorrow.” Missy said softly.

              “Already?”

“Yes, apparently the DA’s been trying to get a hold of me all day. There’s going to be a news conference in about a half hour. We’re probably going to have reporters camped out at our house again.”

“I’d better call Jack and let him know what’s going on so he can warn our other neighbors.” Bob said.

“I’ll finish with Matt. We’ll be right down.” Missy suggested. Bob left the room.

“Missy, I just overheard Bob tell JR about Grant. You okay?” Kerri asked as she barged into the room. Missy was packing up the diaper bag.

“No. I’m not ready for this. I wish I had more time to prepare.” Missy said, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“Here, let me help.” Kerri offered.

“I’m so scared, Kerri. I don’t want to see him again.” Missy admitted.

“It’s alright. Bob and I will help you get through this.”

“No, you don’t need to be in the courtroom and upset. You’ve got the baby and yourself to think about. I won’t have you getting ill because of JJ Grant.” Missy said very pointedly.

“Fine, then I’ll send Rick in my place. C’mon, Bob’s waiting.” Kerri said as she picked up Matthew. Missy grabbed the diaper bag and went to get Jessie out of the playroom.

“TWIN1...you out there?” a voice on the CB asked as Bob and Missy pulled out of the driveway.

              “TWIN1 here.” Bob replied.

“KDOC here. 5-0s in place at your home 20...you should be okay once you get there...press were pulled back.”

              “Thanks, KDOC.” Bob replied.

“That will last until the press conference.” Missy said as she stared out the window.

“Maybe you should face the press head on?” Bob said as he continued driving.

“No. That’s what the DA is for. Daddy’s going to see what the DA can do about getting the press to back off. Daddy wanted us to come stay with them for a few days.”

              “What do you want?”

“Control of my life. So tomorrow, I’m going to go into that courtroom and face that monster and get control back.” Missy decided.

They pulled into their driveway. Bob turned off the car.

“Fine. I’ll come with you. No arguments. We’ll get Aunt Kate to watch Matthew until Kim or Colleen come home from school.” Bob said.

              “Thank you.”

“Mommy, what’s a press conference?” Jessie asked from the back seat.

“An ugly scene, honey. Come on, we’re home.” Missy said  as she got out of the minivan. Kim, AJ, and Colleen were waiting for them.

“Daddy told us about tomorrow.” Kim said.

“C’mon in. We’re avoiding the press.” Bob replied as he opened the door. He went to check messages.

“Jessie, it’s time for bed.” Missy stated as she put Matthew in the playpen.

              “I’ll take her.” Kim offered.

“That’s okay, why don’t you three go raid the refrigerator? I’ve got to get Matthew to bed too. C”mon Jessie.” Missy explained and headed upstairs.

“...unusual, however, the state is ready to prosecute Mr. Grant.” Bob had turned on the tv in the den and was watching the press conference.

“Has Miss Nichols been notified about tomorrow?” a reporter asked.

“Mrs. Townsend and her family has been notified and have asked that the press stay away from their homes. To assist them in their request, both the defense and the state asked and received blanket restraining orders from the Judge in this case. As of five pm today if any member of the press contacts the Grant, Townsend, or Nichols families concerning the case, any of the three families can and will have you arrested. Mrs. Townsend and her family will release a statement shortly. Now, if you don’t mind. That will be all the questions for now.” the DA stepped back away from the mike.

“Hey, Bob. What’s going on?” Colleen asked.

“Watching the press conference. Where’s Missy?”

“Putting the kids to bed. Speaking of which, I’d better get home. Do you need me to stay home tomorrow to watch the kids?” she offered.

“No, but if you could come straight here after school, we’d appreciate it.”

“Will do. Good night.” Colleen gave her brother a hug.

“Daddy, momma’s crying.” Jessie came into the den an hour later.

              “You’re suppose to be asleep.”

“I know, but momma’s crying.” Jessie stated again.

“C’mon, let’s get you to bed. And I’ll go check on mommy.” Bob picked up Jessie and went up stairs.

After Bob tucked Jessie in, he found Missy in their bed crying.

“Hey now. Don’t cry.” Bob said.

“I can’t deal with all of this. I can’t Bob. It’s hard enough that we’re all still grieving over your parents and that we could have lost JR, but JJ pushing up the trial. Bob, I can’t deal with it.” Missy said between sobs. Bob’s cell phone rang.

“Hello?” Bob asked and went into the bathroom

“Bob, it’s Tammy. Is Missy there?”

“Tamm, could you come over? She’s really upset. I can’t get her to stop crying. She says she can’t deal with everything.” Bob asked.

“Sure. I’ll be right there. In the meantime, put on one of her favorite music tapes and make her a cup of tea and see if she’ll drink it for you. If she doesn’t want to talk, that’s okay. Just stay in the room with her. You might be the only stable thing that calms her down.”

              “You think she’ll do something?”

“No, she’s too strong willed for that, she just needs time to get everything in perspective and to deal with it. I’m gonna call her mom and see if she can go over and get the kids.”

“No, the kids stay. Missy needs to feel stable, remember.” Bob said.

“What she doesn’t need is to worry about who’s taking care of them while she’s having a crisis.”

“Look, let me get back to her. Just get over here as soon as you can. The key is hidden behind the kitten sign next to the door.”

A half hour later Tammy showed up.

“She’s on the phone with the DA. Grant plans on pleading guilty and waiving his rights to a jury trial tomorrow.”

“That’s great. She won’t have to testify then.”

“The DA still wants her to testify before sentencing though.”

“He’ll be put away for at least 10 for jumping parole.”

“Even that’s not long enough.” Bob replied. Missy came into the room with the phone still attached to her ear.

“He wants to see Jessie.” Missy said, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“No way in hell. She’s our daughter, I’ve adopted her. He has no rights to her.” Bob exclaimed. Tammy was astonished. Bob took the phone from Missy.

“Missy, you okay?” Tammy led Missy out into the kitchen.

“I’m a wreck. I am so angry I don’t know how to let it out or control it or anything.” Missy stated as she sat down on the nearest chair. “I feel like I’ve lost control over everything.”

“Only if you let JJ see that you’re this upset, have you lost.” Tammy told her.

“He’s not going to see Jessie. No way in hell.” Missy said in anger.

              “Good. Get angry.”

“I’m gonna fight until he’s locked up for good.” Missy stated. Bob came into the kitchen.

“The DA’s getting in touch with Grant’s lawyer now to tell him no deal, we’re going to trial.” Bob explained. “We are to be at the courthouse at eight-thirty. I’m going to go check on the kids.” Bob left as quickly as he entered.

“Missy, I’m going to go home now. Are you okay?” Tammy asked her cousin-in-law.

“I will be as soon as the trial is over and Grant is put away for good.” Missy stated. “Go on home to Jase. I’m sorry Bob called you to come all the way over here.”

“Nonsense. Call your therapist before you go to court tomorrow and set up an appointment though, okay? And if you need me, call my cell phone. I’ll keep it on all day.”

Missy walked Tammy to the door.

              The next morning...

“Mrs. Townsend! Mrs. Townsend! Will you let JJ Grant see his daughter?” a reporter asked as Bob, Missy, Rick, Kerri, and Dr. and Mrs. Nichols made their way into the courthouse.

“My wife has no comment at this time. Thank you.” Bob shouted back.

“He wants to see Jessica!” Mrs. Nichols questioned as soon as they were escorted into a waiting room.

“I won’t let him, mom. Bob and I will fight that all the way.” Missy stated flatly.

              DA Mitchell entered the room.

“Good morning, everyone. Missy, I’m not going to lie to you. You’re going to be grilled again. JJ’s got a different set of lawyers and the Federal lawyers are going to bring everything from the first trial out in the open.”

“I’ve decided that I want to face him. I want to testify in court.” Missy shocked everyone. “Last night when you told me he wanted to see Jessie, that was the last straw. I want to face him and let him know that I am not some weakling and that Jessie is not his daughter any more than he is her father. Bob is her father.” Missy stated.

“Are you absolutely sure that you want to do this? You testifying in court will make the federal case much more stronger.” DA Mitchell told her.

              “Melissa, be sure.” Bob said.

“I am more certain that I want to do this now more than ever. I’m taking back our lives once and for all.” Missy assurred both her husband and the DA.

“Honey, we’re all behind you.” her father stated.

“Alright then. Let me go tell the Feds what you want to do. I’ll be right back.” DA Mitchell said. “Thank you, Missy.”

“Don’t thank me yet, I haven’t testified.” Missy told him as he left the room.

“What happened last night?” Rick asked.

“JJ tried to plea bargain only if he could see Jessie.” Bob asked.

“Kerri, you shouldn’t be here. Things are going to get pretty intense.” Missy said.

“I’m in good hands with a Doctor sitting right next to me. We’ll be fine.” Kerri told her.

DA Mitchell came back into the room.

“Can you all stay for jury selection?” he smiled.

              “Yes.” Bob stated.

“Good, follow me.” DA Mitchell led them to the courtroom and sat them behind the Prosecutor’s table. JJ stared at Missy.

“Counselor, refrain your client from staring at the audience or he’ll be reprimanded for contempt and fined.” the Federal Lawyer stated.

“He’s just looking around.” Grant’s lawyer replied.

              “Missy, you alright?” Bob asked.

“I’m fine, honey. Don’t let his staring bother you.” Missy stated. The Judge spoke.

“Mrs. Townsend, I have been informed that you will be an active participant in this trial, is that correct?”

“Yes your honor and I’d like to explain why before you start the jury selection.” Missy stood up and explained.

“Any objections Counselor?” the judge asked Grant’s lawyer.

              “No, your honor.”

“You have the floor, Mrs. Townsend.”

“Thank you your honor. I know this is highly unusual. Up until last night I had every intention of being videotaped and not coming to court and having to face the defendant, but your honor, last night, it was brought to my attention that he would plea bargain if he could see my six year old daughter. Your honor, seven years ago, the defendant raped me and the result was my daughter. She has no knowledge that he is her biological father. She knows that her biological father is in jail for doing some bad things. She considers my husband to be her father. The couple who had adopted her have passed away and she is now legally ours again. My father-in-law and mother-in-law have recently passed away. She has taken all these deaths rather well your honor, but last night when she saw how upset I was, she was so afraid that she was going to lose me or my husband. If she were to see the defendant, it would only cause her more pain and heartache. Someday when she’s older, she’ll know who the defendant is, and she can judge for herself, but right now, I am looking out for her best interest and seeing him is not it.”

“Your honor, we were not aware of the recent tragedies.” Grant’s lawyer spoke.

“I highly doubt that since it was highly publicized due to the families recent media history. I know that your client has seen various news reports and newspaper articles. The prosecution is prepared to interview several witnesses from the penitentiary, inmates, the warden, several guards, his parents.”

“DA Mitchell, when were you made aware of the request?”

“Late last night and I notified Mrs. Townsend right away.”

“Fine. Mr. Grant, we’re going to take a recess right now before your jury trial selection gets underway. During this recess, I suggest you tell your lawyer everything that’s going on. I’m a fair judge and if you or your lawyer are going to be pulling stunts like last night, I won’t be very fair.”

              “Yes, your honor.”

“This court is in recess for thirty minutes. I suggest that the defense use it wisely. Mrs. Townsend I thank you for coming today and speaking to the court. I know it must have been really hard for you. I am aware of the recent losses you and your family have endured and my prayers are with you.”

“Thank you, your honor.” Missy said. The judge left the courtroom and Bob immediately went to Missy who stood at the Prosecutor’s table, looking at JJ.

“You did good, Miss, really good.” Bob said as he hugged his wife. JJ couldn’t look back at her.

“I need some water.” was all Missy said.

              After the recess...

“Your honor, I cannot continue on as Mr. Grant’s lawyer. Information has been kept from me.”

“What information...everything has been public since day one. This story is as hot as the Simpson case and is known around the world.” DA Mitchell objected.

“DA Mitchell is right, Counselor. Unless the defendant no longer wants your services, I will not accept another delay in this trial. After all, your client is the one who pushed this up to today.  Mr. Grant, do you want Mr. Powers to continue on as your lawyer.”

“He doesn’t need to, I’m pleading guilty. I don’t want to hurt my daughter or her mother’s family or my family any more. I just want this over with.”

“It will never be over as long as you continue your conniving ways to get to us.” Missy shouted out.

              “Mrs. Townsend...”

              “Sorry your honor.”

“DA Mitchell and Mr. Collins? Is his plea acceptable?”

“Yes. The Defendant understands that the sentence we recommend is life in a maximum security prison.”

“Very well then. Mr. Grant, I sentence you to life in a maximum federal prison in California to be carried out immediately. I want to see the lawyers in my chambers immediately. This case is now closed.” the judge hit the gavel. Missy buried her head in her hands and cried. Bob stayed with her as everyone cleared the courtroom.

“Melissa, Bob?” DA Mitchell came back in 45 minutes later. Missy was wiping her eyes, trying to calm down.

              “Mitchell.”

“Marshall Evans and Agent Johnson are escorting Grant to California. They are on their way to the airport now. The Judge wanted you to know. It’s over, Missy. He’s in a federal prison with no chance of parole for the next twenty-five years.” DA Mitchell explained.

“You don’t know JJ.” Missy stated flatly and looked away. Ed “Boomer” Nelson came into the room.

“Missy, can we talk now?” he asked.

“I have nothing to say to you Boomer. Nothing at all. Bob, take me home please.” Missy asked.

              “Missy, I’m sorry.”

“You’re sorry! You could have put JJ away seven years ago and then Missy would not have had to worry about him getting paroled or coming after her. He kidnapped her right from surgery, she nearly died. You were a coward seven years ago and you are still a coward. Stay away from me and my family, Boomer.” Bob told him. Bob led Missy out to the car through the reporters.

“Can we have a statement Missy?” a reporter shouted.

“Not right now, please. Leave us alone.” Bob said as he helped Missy into her father’s car.

“Missy, it’s over this time. For good.” her father said.

“I hope you’re right daddy. I hope you’re right.” Missy said as Bob slid in next to her.

              “Let’s go, dad.” Bob said.

“AJ’s mom called, Missy. She would like for you to call her back.” Colleen said when Missy and Bob arrived home later that afternoon. Bob had gone into the den to call Jase and Rick.

“Thanks, Colleen. And thanks for watching the kids today.” Missy handed Colleen 40 dollars.

“No problem. Matt’s sleeping and Jessie is watching a movie downstairs. You didn’t have to pay me.”

“Hey, it’s only fair. Go get a new pair of jeans or something with it. And don’t tell Bob how much I gave you or he’d kill me.” Missy said as they hugged. “How’s the homework coming?”

“Alot to catch up on but I’m managing okay. Kim and AJ have been terrific with letting me borrow their notes. Your mom even helps me if I need it.”

              “Good.”

“Oh, I found this in the mailbox when I went out to get the paper.” Colleen handed Missy a letter from Boomer.

“Thanks, Coll. Let Bob know I went upstairs before you go?” Missy asked.

              “I will. Goodnight.”

“Goodnight.” Missy replied and went upstairs. After checking on Matt, she went into their bedroom and sat down on the window seat and read the letter.

              Missy,

I never, never meant to hurt you. I was so stupid back then. I used to worship JJ. Alot of people did. I know you’ll never forget what happened, but do you think you could try to forgive me? Please?

                                                                                                    Boomer

Missy looked out the window for the longest time. Bob stood and watched her from the doorway for a little while before speaking.

“Missy?” he asked as he walked over to her.

              “I’m fine, Bob.” she insisted.

“I know you are. Just wanted to know what you were thinking about.” he replied.

“Boomer. He wants my forgiveness.” Missy handed him the note.

“What do you want to do?”

“He’s right, I’ll never forget what happened, and forgiving him isn’t so bad, I just don’t want to let him into my life again and have something else happen where he leaves or cowards away, ya know?”

“I do know. Look, I was angry today when I yelled at Boomer, but he deserves forgiveness, he came back and finally told the truth. Don’t hold him accountable for Grant’s actions.” Bob told his wife.

“I’ve got some thinking to do, can you handle giving Jessie a bath and putting her to bed tonight? I’m going for a drive.” Missy said.

“No problem. Keep the cell phone with you, okay? Just in case I need to get a hold of you.” Bob assured her.

              “Thanks, hon.”

“Wait...” Bob said he went over to his sock drawer and took out the keys to the beach house.  “If you end up where I think you might, take these. It’s suppose to rain.” Bob handed her the keys, “Call me if you’re going to stay overnight so I don’t worry.”

              “I promise. I love you.”

“I know you do. Just don’t do anything rash okay?”

“I’ll see you later.” Missy said and left Bob standing in their room.

“Daddy? Where’s mommy?” Jessie asked as Bob brushed her hair as she got ready for bed.

“Mommy needed to go do something. She’ll be back later on.” Bob replied softly.

“Is that bad man gone for good now?”

“I hope so, baby. C’mon, time for lights out.”

              “I love you daddy.”

              “I love you, too.”

Missy drove to the beach. Bob knew she would, she had originally began driving toward her parents’ house but the car led her to the beach. She had the Cell phone in her hip pocket as she parked the car in the beach house garage.

Missy walked thru the house and went to the living room where she opened the sliding glass doors that looked out on the ocean.

“Fresh air! Ahh.” she said aloud as she breathed in the salt air and took in the noise of the ocean. It was only 8:30 as she sat on the stairs to the beach and watched the activity.

“Hey, Bob. It’s Kerri. Is Missy there?” Kerri asked when Bob answered the phone.

“No she’s not, Kerri. She went for a drive. How are you?”

“Okay, thanks. I need to talk to her about the stores. Could you leave her a message to call me tomorrow?”

              “Sure. Hey, is Rick around?”

“Hold on, he’s on the computer.” Kerri put Bob on hold.

              “Bobbie? How’s everything?”

“Missy’s sorting some things through. Boomer apologized yet again in the courtroom and left a letter here for her with Colleen. Missy went for a drive and I’m hoping that she went to the beach. I even gave her the keys to the beach house just in case, but, that’s not why I’m calling. I’m calling because we need to meet with Uncle Joe about everything from Colleen to the houses to the burial costs.”

“Okay, we’ll have to probably do it over at the house since JR’s still recuperating and stuff.”

“That’s fine with me. Could you get something set up as soon as possible?”

“Sure. Oh, the guys want to get together for some basketball on Saturday. You up for it?”

              “Okay, put me down.”

“Great, I’ll call you back when everything is set up with Uncle Joe and JR.”

              “Thanks, Rick.”

              “Anytime.”

Missy still wasn’t home when Bob awoke the next morning.   He checked the messages.

“Hi, Bob. I finally looked at the time and it’s nearly three am. I’m not going to drive home. I’ll crash here until later on today then I’ll be home. I’m okay. Honest. Give Jessie a hug for me. I’ll call you when I wake up. I love you.” Missy’s voice relayed.

“Good girl.” Bob said as he hung up the phone. He went to check on Matthew and Jessie.

Bob made breakfast for him and the children and got both kids up and dressed and taken care of before he called Missy’s mom.

              “Hello?”

“Hi, mom. Could you watch Matthew for today? Missy’s got some things to sort through and I need to get down to the office for a meeting.”

“Sure, bring Matt on over. I’ll leave the back door unlocked. Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, Missy just needs time, ma.”

“Alright, I’ll see you in a little bit.”

After Bob hung up the phone he decided to leave a message on Missy’s voicemail.

“Morning, hon. Your mom’s got Matt and I need to go into work for a bit. I missed you this morning. I love you, call me.” Bob left that message.

Missy woke up to the sun hitting her face thru the bay window. She had fallen asleep in one of the bedrooms overlooking the ocean. She looked over toward the end table. 10:48am. She went to look for her cell phone to call home. She checked her messages. Then called Bob at work.

              “Cauldwell construction.”

“Bob Cauldwell, please. It’s his wife.” Missy replied.

“One moment please.” a ffew seconds later Bob picked up the phone.

              “Honey?”

“Yeah, it’s me. I just woke up.”

              “I was beginning to worry.”

“I know. I’m sorry, guess I needed the sleep.”

              “You okay?”

“Remarkably well. I’m at the beach house. Looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day.”

              “When are you coming home?”

“As soon as I get off the phone with you.”

“You want me to meet you at home?”

“That’s alright, we’ll talk when you get home. I know what I have to do. Are the reporters still camped out in front?”

              “Of course.”

“Okay, I’ll stop by my mom’s and get Matt. Thank you for letting me go last night.”

“Any time. Um, I, ah, have an appointment with THE doctor later if you know what I mean.”

“Okay. I’ll see you at home. I love you.”

“I love you too...oh, Kerri called for you last night. She needs to discuss business with you.”

“Okay. I’ll call her later. I’d better go. I’ll see you later.”

              “Okay.”

              “Bob.”

              “Yeah...”

              “I love you.”

“I love you too.” Bob hung up first.

Missy locked up the beach house and headed home, ready to start life over without JJ in her life. She was ready to face Boomer and talk about that night. She was ready to face reporters and even JJ’s family. She was ready to face the world again.

“Mom...mom?” Missy asked as she walked into the kitchen of her parents’ house.

“Hi, honey. Matt’s sleeping in the den. Everything okay?” Missy’s mom peeked out of the pantry.

“Finally, I can honestly answer that it will be.”

“Good. So what are your plans for today?”

“Kerri needs to talk about the stores then I’ll probably take Jessie and Matthew shopping. They’re both growing so fast.”

“What about the press conference? When are you going to do that?”

“I have to talk to Bob about that. How’s Jenn doing? I overheard that she’s pregnant again.”

“Not good. She’s been restricted to bed rest. I’m glad you’re home early. I’m going over to clean up the house for her.”

“How come no one told me about this? I thought we all agreed no secrets?” Missy was mad.

“Jenn didn’t want to burden you. She knew you’d want to help out no matter what.”

“Well, I do want to help. Someone should have told me.” Missy stated.

              “I’m sorry dear...we just felt that ...”

“I don’t care what you felt. What about how I would feel being left out? Get ready to go, I’ll drive you over. I’m going with.” Missy left the kitchen and went to get Matt. Once she had Matt packed up and in the car, she called Bob on the cell phone.

              “Hello?”

              “Bob Cauldwell please?”

              “Just a moment.”

“Missy? What’s wrong?” Bob asked a minute or so later.

“Did you know that Jenn’s been restricted to bed rest?”

              “No honey. Is everything alright?”

“I’m going to go over and see if she needs me to do anything. I’ll pick up Jessie at school on my way.”

“Don’t over do it. And I’ll pick up Jessie.” Bob stated.

              “Are you sure?”

              “Positive. Give Jenn my love.”

“I will.” Missy hung up the phone.

“Well, what did Bob say?” Missy’s mom asked as she put some supplies in the back of the minivan.

“He’ll pick up Jessie and not to overdo it. I’ll call Kerri once we know that Jenn’s okay.”

“Shall we go then?” her mother asked.

              “Yeah.” Missy replied.

              “Hi, Aunt Mi...”

              “Hi Andrew. Where’s mommy?”

“On the couch. Daddy’s in the kitchen.” he replied.

“Let’s go see mommy, okay? Ma, go see Kenny.” Missy said and let Andrew lead the way to Jenn.

“Aunt Mi and gramma are here mommy.”

              “Thanks, honey. Hi, Missy.”

“Hi, Jenn. I heard you are restricted to bed rest. I came to help.”

              “Missy...”

“Jenn, listen to me. I’m your sister-in-law, and Kenny has to work and you need help with the kids. No arguing with me.”

“What about you? What’s Bob going to say?”

“Don’t overdo it, but I won’t be. We can both be fragile together. Okay?” Missy smiled.

“Sounds like a plan to me.”

“Good. Then it’s settled. Can I get you anything?”

              “Some p-e-a-c-e-a-n-d-q-u-i-e-t please?” Jenn asked.

“Ah, I understand. Andrew, c’mon, I need your help in the kitchen.”

              “Okay.”

“Go on ahead, I’ll be right there. Jenn, I’ll get Ken to help you upstairs...no...no arguments.” Missy stated.

              “Thanks, Missy.”

              “You got it.”

“Andrew, Gramma just put a video on for you why don’t you go on in and watch it.” Kenny suggested to his son. Andrew ran straight for the den.

“Ken, Jenn wants to go up and lie down. I told her you’d take her.” Missy explained as she took over making a salad for him.

“Okay, I’ll be right back. Thanks you two for coming over and helping out.”

“That’s what we’re for. Melissa, call Kerri. See how she’s doing, talk business. I’ve got the kitchen under control. I thought the house would be a mess, but it’s pretty spectacular.”

“Jenn’s mom was probably over this morning.” Missy said as she dialed Kerri at home.

“Okay, Ken, how serious is it?” his mother wanted to know as soon as he came back into the kitchen.

“The doctor says that Jenn won’t carry this one to term...so, we’re trying to carry it as long as we can. Her hormone level and the placenta aren’t very strong. Like Missy and Bob’s decision a few years ago, we decided not to abort.” Kenny explained. Missy was dumbfounded.

“I’m so sorry, Ken.” Missy said and gave her brother a hug.

“Thanks, Missy. We’re still in shock so we weren’t sure we wanted to tell anyone just yet.”

“Well, we’re glad you have. Now, your father says you’re shift starts as three, so sit down and relax. Lunch is almost ready.” their mother directed.

“Jenn’s sister will be over around 2:30 so you two don’t have to stay.”

“Nonsense. We want to be here, so don’t try to throw us out.”

              “Missy, you look like hell.”

“That’s why I’m going to go check on Amanda and Matt and then go watch some tv with Andrew.” Missy replied. She knew that if she didn’t please Ken, he’d get upset.

“Thanks, Missy.” Ken said as she passed him. He touched her arm.

              “You’re welcome.”

“Missy...wake up, hon. C’mon Missy.” Bob said a few hours later. Missy had changed both Matthew and Amanda and had taken Matthew down to the den with her where she watched some videos with Andrew until they all fell asleep.

“Oh my gosh, what time is it? Where’s Matthew?” Missy asked.

“Nearly six. You’re mom is feeding Matthew and Jessie and Andrew are out back playing and dinner’s almost ready.”

“Let me guess. Kenny left word with everyone not to wake me.”

“Don’t get mad. I know for a fact that you haven’t been getting much sleep so just be grateful, okay?” Bob said as he stroked her hair.

“I’m not mad. I just came over here to help Jenn and stay out of Ken’s way.”

“Just knowing that you want to help is helping them both. Mom told me what the doctor told Ken and Jenn today. We will be there for them.”

              “Through every step.”

“Then don’t get upset at any of us now for letting you sleep or making everything easy and lazy for you.”

“I just feel like I’m not doing anything to pull my weight in my life.”

“Don’t you see though, you give me your love and support, two wonderful children, another family, friendship and life.”

“But I don’t feel independent of you at all and I don’t like that one bit. What if something happened, god forbid, to you. I don’t know if I could go on without you.”

“You’re never going to have to worry about that. But that’s not what really is bothering you, now is it??? If it’s JJ and the past, let it go...just let it go.” he pleaded.

“Sounds like you had a good meeting with the psychiatrist today.”

              “I did.”

“I’m trying to let go, I want to forgive Boomer and I want my life back.”

“I know you do so let me help.” Bob sat down next to her and put his arms around her.

“I wish this whole mess yesterday never happened, but I’m glad they took him away. Jessie’s safe from him and I’m glad.”

“Me too. So, did the beach house do you some good then?”

              “Yeah, it did.”

“What time did you say it was again?” she suddenly asked.

              “Six, why?”

“My meds! I missed the four o’clock dose.”

“No need to panic. I’ll go get you some water, where’s your purse?”

              “Next to Matt’s diaper bag.”

              “I’ll get that too.”

“Thanks, honey.” Missy couldn’t believe that her watch alarm didn’t go off for her for her meds.

“Gee mommy, what do you have in here? The sink?” Jessie asked as she came into the room followed by Bob.

“Hi, sweetie. Did daddy tell you to say that.”

“Of course.” Jessie said and gave Missy a kiss on the cheek. “Why are you still taking medicine mommy?”

“It’s to help so that I don’t get real sick with a bad cold or anything.” Missy said. It was true. The doctors wanted to build up her immune system.

“Ok...gramma says dinner’s done, gotta clean up.” Jessie said and was off.

“Do you think the meds are working?” Bob said as soon as Jessie had left the room.

“We’ll find out next week when I go in for a check-up.”

“What do you say you and me go home, without the kids, and have a quiet night? Your mom said she’d take them and you know Kim and Colleen would love to play big sisters.” Bob said.

“I say when do we leave?” Missy asked after she took her medicine.

“Let me go tell your mom you said yes while you go check on Jenn. Oh, your mom is also taking Amanda and Andrew with her.”

“Bob, that’s too many kids. Even for her. Jessie and Andrew can get pretty rowdy.”

“That’s what your sister and Coll are for. Don’t worry, it’s already set up. Besides your parents would not take no for an answer. Your dad feels that you and I need to work on us.”

“Boy, how I love my dad.” Missy smiled. Bob helped her up off the couch and waited til she was almost up the stairs before going on into the kitchen.

“Is everything cleared, Bob?” Missy’s mom asked.

“Yes, it is. Thanks, mom. Are you sure you can handle getting all four kids in the car?”

“Kevin will be over shortly. Ken will be home soon. I’ll be fine. Are you staying for supper?”

“I’m going to get Missy out of here now before we both change our minds.”

“Remember now, talking is the key.”

“Thanks, mom. It means alot that you’re so supportive of us.”

“You both deserve to be happy.”

“We are, it’s just that when the past slips in to haunt us, well, that’s when we get in trouble.”

“Well, think of tonight as the start of a new beginning.”

“Mom, Jenn needs some more water.” Missy said as she came into the kitchen.

“Alright, I’ve got her tray ready.”

“I’ll take it up. Want to say goodbye.” Bob replied as he took the tray from his mother-in-law.

“Thanks hon.” Missy gave her husband a kiss on the cheek.

“Don’t say a word, Melissa. You and Bob need some QT.” Missy’s mom stated.

“I wasn’t planning on saying a word. Just thank you.”

              “You’re welcome.”

“Alright, the ringers are turned onto low, the answering machine will pick up after a few rings, and your mom says the kids are just fine.” Bob said as they sat down at the kitchen table to talk. It was an hour after they had left Ken and Jenn’s.

              “That’s good. I’m glad.”

“Nervous? Your hands are a little clammy.” Bob said as he took her hands in his.

              “No...I’m okay.”

“So how was your time at the beach house?” Bob jumped right in.

              “Enlightening, frustrating, peaceful, useful.”

“And...” Bob was trying to get her to open up.

“Have you forgiven Boomer?” Missy wanted to know.

“I should never have yelled at him the way I did. I was protecting you.”

“I know that, what I’m trying to say is that I’m not sure if I can welcome him back into my life again. What else does he want from me besides forgiveness?”

“He didn’t know what was happening that night. He testified to that under oath and his story hasn’t changed after all these years. Maybe he just wants to know that you don’t hate him. After all, you three were really close in those days.” Bob added. Missy winced.

“I’m guarded, you know. I’m afraid that if I let him into our lives that something will happen. How am I suppose to trust someone who I’ve believed did nothing he possibly could do while I was being raped?”

“Forgive him and give him another chance again.” Bob suggested.

“Are you following your own advice?”

“I already have.” Bob said. Missy stood up and walked over to look out the sliding glass doors.

“I don’t want Boomer in our lives. I can’t deal with knowing everything again. I’m always crying or tired or snapping at Jess or you. I don’t want the constant reminder of how Jessie happened every time I see him.” she said as she looked at the stars above.

“I understand. What about work?” Bob wanted her to get everything out in the open.

“I need to talk with Kerri, but it looks like we’ll be expanding our employees. I’m not going back. I want to be here for our kids. I want to be here for your family and I just want to be lazy for awhile. Rebuild the strength I lost the past few years. I want us to plan a camping trip for next summer and I want to be healthy enough to go on it and pull my own weight. Most of all...I want you and me to get back to the way we were when we first met. Full of passion, love, and outrageous fun.” Missy admitted.

“I think I’m falling in love with you all over again.” Bob smiled at his wife.

“I also want to start volunteering at the rape crisis center. I could be of some use to the people that come in there.”

“Whoa, there...one step at a time. You are still not back to normal yet. Your doctors have all said so. You are going to be the lazy wife of mine and let the work alone for everyone else. Help Jenn and help yourself. Get stronger first before helping out at the rape crisis center. I think you still need time to deal with the rape. You said so yourself...right now every time you look at Jess or Boomer, you think of the rape.”

“You’re right. I know you are. I’ve already made a doctor’s appointment to get advice on a physical therapist. And I see the shrink on Monday. It’s not going to be easy, dealing with Boomer now that JJ’s in prison in California. It’s going to take time and I’m going to need your help.” she told her husband.

The phone rang...it was Missy’s mom.

“Melissa...did you pack some children’s Tylenol?” she asked.

“Always. Check the pocket on the inside of the side panel of the diaper bag. Is everything alright?”

              “Matthew’s running a slight fever.”

“Oh, ma...he’s got an ear infection. His medicine is in the cold pack with his bottles. I’m sorry I forgot to mention that to you.”

“It’s alright honey. We know now why he’s so cranky. How’s things going with you and Bob?”

              “Alright.”

“Jessie wants to say goodnight to you both.”

“Hold on...I’ll have Bob pick up the other phone.” Missy explained to Bob to pick up the phone.

to be continued...
