A half hour later they were all on their way back to the Nichols' house.  Bob promised them he would put the CB on and talk to them all the way home.

"How `bout it TWIN1.  You got that radio on?" Rick said.

"Yeah, TWIN2.  I'm here." Bob replied.

"Where are you headed?"

"Better half's parents place.  Better half is staying the night at the hospital and her parents convinced me to stay at their house.  Where are you?"

"Powder Puff and I were headed over to see you and your better half."

"VIsiting hours are over, but if you want to stop by the house, you can." Mr. Nichols broke in.

"Thanks, PAPA-DOC.  Is it okay with you TWIN1?" Rick replied.

"Yeah.  We'll see you there.  I'm out." Bob said and turned the CB down and the tape player up.  He was playing one of the many tapes that Missy had made him that was full of love songs.  It was one of Missy's favorite ways to show him how much she loved him and the tapes helped him calm down whenever he was upset.  When he arrived at the Nichols' house, he parked the car out front and sat there listening to the tape.   Missy's parents saw him from the window and decided to let him be by himself for awhile while they talked to Kimberly.

"Kimmy!  We need to talk to you.  Could you come down here for a minute?" Mr. Nichols yelled up the stairs.

"Yeah, daddy?  What's wrong?" Kim said, she was holding the book she was reading in one hand and rubbing her eyes with the other.

"Come sit down, honey.  It's not good news." Mrs. Nichols patted the cushion next to her.  Kimmy obeyed and looked at both of her parents.

"It's Missy.  Bob, your mother, and I have admitted her to the hospital as per her doctor's orders.  Missy is losing the baby, Kimmy, and she's going to need everyone's support, no matter what.  Do you understand?" Mr. Nichols told his youngest daughter.

"Oh, no!  What happened?" Kimberly asked.

"The fetus was detaching from the safety of the uterus wall and from what Dr. Feagel has told us is that if Missy doesn't miscarry herself in the next 36 hours, they will induce it for Missy's safety and Missy's life." Mrs. Nichols explained.

"Does Kenny know?" Kimberly asked.

"Yes, Bob told him. Speaking of Bob, he's staying here again tonight.  In case Missy or the hospital calls.  If you want, you can join us out in the kitchen.  Rick and Kerri will be here shortly to be with Bob.  We didn't want to leave you out on what was going on with your sister." Mr. Nichols said.

"Can I stop by and visit Missy after school tomorrow?" Kim began to cry.

"Of course you can, honey.  Try not to worry, she'll be just fine." Mrs. Nichols assured her daughter.

"If you don't mind, I'm going to go up to my room." Kim excused herself and ran up to her room.

"I'm going to go put on some water for tea and coffee." Marilyn Nichols suggested.

"That sounds good. I'll call the hospital to let them know where we all are then I'll come out and join you in the kitchen." Kevin Nichols replied.

"It looks as if Bob is still in his car." Kerri pointed out as they turned onto the Nichols' street.

"How `bout it TWIN1.  You got a copy on TWIN2?" Rick keyed up.  Bob didn't reply.

"Why don't you park the car and go talk to him, I'll go in and talk to Missy's parents." Kerri suggested.

"You sure?" Rick asked as he parked the car a few cars down from Bob's.

"Yeah, he's your brother.  He needs you.  I'll be okay." Kerri encouraged Rick.

"You are a godsend." Rick kissed her on the forehead.

"Of course, why else would you be marrying me." She gave him a big smile.

"I love you."

"And I love you." Kerri said and got out of the car.   Rick got out of the car, locked it and waited until Kerri was at the Nichols' front door before heading over towards Bob's car.

"A.J., please don't tell JJ.  He's caused her enough grief.  The less stress Missy has the better." Kim begged A.J. When she got to her room, she had picked up the phone and just dialed the first number she could think of.  She told A.J. what her parents just told her.

"Okay, okay.  I promise.  Listen, I'm moving in with my grandparents at the end of the month.  My parents feel that it would be best for me if I did.  After I sat down with them and told them how much I liked you and how much anger I had toward JJ for doing what he did and that because of JJ, you weren't allowed to see me, they talked it over with my grandparents and asked me if I would like to move in with them.  Now, do you think we can see each other?" A.J. pleaded with Kim.

"Can I think about it?  Even if I agree, we're still going to have to sneak around for a little while until Missy is out of the woods.  I'll talk to my older brother first before I talk to my parents.  He's more neutral than they are." Kim gave A.J. hope.

"Sounds like they favor Missy over you." A.J. said.

"Actually, it's just the opposite.  She just needs them more right now and they're there for her just like they are for me.  Well, I'd better go.  Thank you for listening to me when I needed a friend to talk to." Kim apologized.

"I hope that someday soon, we can be more than just friends, Kim.  If you need me, you know my phone number.  I'll see you tomorrow at school."

"Okay, and thanks again." Kim said and hung up the phone.

"Bob, let me in. Bob!" Rick pounded on the driver's side window of the car.  Bob had his eyes closed with tears falling down his cheeks.  The music was still playing.  Rick fiddled around on his keychain for the spare set to Bob's car. Rick went around to the passenger side and unlocked the door, got in, turned down the radio, and looked at Bob.

"Please just leave me alone for a little while." Bob quietly spoke.

"I'm worried about you, and if you keep doing stuff like this, everyone else will be as well." Rick said.

"I'm fine. I..."

"You are not fine, you're hurting.  I know you and I know that it's killing you to see Missy in the hospital to miscarry your child.  I know you wish it was you going through all the pain instead of her.  I know all this because I know how much you love her.  Anyone who knows you can see it in your eyes and your actions." Rick looked at his brother and put his hand on Bob's shoulder.  "I'm your twin brother.  I'm a part of you and you're a part of me.  You and I know everything there is to know about the other.  Don't you think I know better than to leave you alone right now?"

"I know you do.  What would you do if it were Kerri?"

"Probably the exact same things you are doing.  The exact same feelings, reactions.  We're only human.  You both will pull thru this.  You gotta believe that."

"You know, for being the younger twin, you certainly do know alot." Bob teased.  He was beginning to feel better and think less selfishly.

"I know.  Why don't we go on into the house now and get some coffee and some of Mrs. Nichols' peanut butter cookies that you like so much." Rick grinned.

"Yeah, yeah.  That sounds good." Bob said.  He turned off the CB and the radio and they got out of the car to join the others.

Just as they were getting to the front door, Bob stopped Rick in the pathway. "Wait a minute, did you ask Kerri to marry you tonight?" Bob suddenly said.

"Yes and she said yes."

"Good.  Just checking." Bob said and they walked up the door.  Kerri opened it for them.

"Hurry up before all the cookies are gone.  Mr. Nichols is eating them up like there's no tomorrow." Kerri instructed the guys as they walked into the hallway.

"What a tragedy!" Bob gasped, "Congratulations on your engagement, little sister." he continued to tease.

"Is this what I have to look forward to?  Many years of torture from not only my husband-to-be, but my future brother-in-law as well?  Oh, boy!  Missy and I are going to have our hands full with you two.   Thanks, Bob." Kerri gave him a hug.

"I thought I heard your voices.  Missy's on the phone, Bob.  She wants to talk to you." Mrs. Nichols said.

"Thanks, Marilyn. If you don't mind, I'll get it in the den." Bob bolted out of the room.

"Miss?  Hi hon, you should be resting, you know." Bob tried to sound cheerful.

"I know.  I was having a wonderful dream about our wedding when a nurse woke me up to take my temperature.   I haven't been able to go back to sleep since so I thought I would call and talk to you because I miss you."

"I miss you too.  Your parents felt it would be best if I came home with them and got some rest as well.   It's going to be hard because I've gotten so use to having a bed partner."

"I know.  We'll be together again soon."

"You know it.  Listen, as much as I love talking to you, I really should let you go so you can get some sleep."

"Wait.  There's one more thing I called for."

"What is it?"

"I want you to get in touch with Kenny and get his lawyer friend's number."

"Already have it. Kenny brought it by the hospital earlier tonight.   I'm going to call him tomorrow."

"Let's do this together, okay?" Missy asked.

"Okay, now, I love you and I want you to stop worrying and get some sleep.  I'll see you in the morning." Bob told her.

"I love you too and you do the same. Bye." Missy said and hung up the phone.  Rick was standing at the doorway to the den when Bob hung up the phone.

"Everything okay?" Rick asked.

"Yeah, everything is just fine.  And everything that's not will be fine soon." Bob replied.  Rick saw him smile a real smile for the first time all evening.

"Good.  Come on and join us in the kitchen.  Kerri just told Missy's parents about the engagement.  Mrs. Nichols congratulated her as if she were her own daughter.  It's amazing how much Missy's parents care about all of us." Rick commented.

"They're good people.  Trusting people and they've been there for Kerri ever since her mother died right before she graduated from high school.  So, I guess you could say that she's like another daughter to them.  Didn't Kerri tell you all of this?" Bob asked.

"She doesn't talk about her mom much and when she does, she gets distant.  As for her father, she's really worried about him.  All I know is that he moved out of the area because there were too many memories, but I have a feeling there's something more." Rick sat down next to Bob on the couch.

"Kerri's father is an alcoholic.  He began drinking soon after Kerri's mom died.  I shouldn't be telling you this, she should.  I think you should talk to her about this.  After all, you two are now engaged.  You have a right to know what her family is like." Bob said and stood up to stretch.

"You're right.  I will, but we'd better go out and join everyone before they come in here after us." Rick said.

They joined Kerri and the Nichols in the kitchen for a little while before Kerri and Rick set out for home and Bob went into the den to try to get some sleep.  Kevin and Marilyn Nichols stayed up and talked in the kitchen.

"Kev? I've been thinking about Missy's situation with JJ Grant.   Isn't there anything we can do to assure that he won't bother her?"

"It's out of our hands.  They're both adults.  Missy knows what she's doing.  She's taking care of it.  Hon, you've got to let go.  She's not 15 anymore.  We can only do so much for her now."

"I know.  I just want everything to run smoothly for her.  Did I tell you that JJ Grant's younger brother, A.J. and Kim were friends?"

"That's fine.  I have nothing against A.J. so long as he doesn't follow in his brother's foot steps." Marilyn Nichols was aghast.

"I don't believe this.  Several years ago you told both our girls that they were not to have anything to do with any member of JJ's family, Kevin.  AJ is his younger brother." Marilyn said.

"My views have changed.  A.J. is not his brother.  You cannot condemn a person for another person's actions, hon.  You can't.  It's not right, Marilyn."

"I don't know."

"I'll talk to Kim about A.J. tomorrow.  Okay?" Kevin Nichols asked.

"Okay."

"Why don't you go on up to bed.  You look exhausted.  I'll be up in a little while." Mr. Nichols suggested.  Marilyn didn't argue with him, instead she got up, rinsed out her tea cup, and left the kitchen.  Kevin waited until he heard her walk up the stairs before breaking down and crying.  He hated crying in front of her.  He knew that she knew that he did cry.  Crying was just not something he let the family see.

The Nichols house was completely quiet when the phone rang at 4:48 that morning.  Everyone was asleep, even Bob had dozed off.

"Hello?" Kevin Nichols grumbled into the phone.

"Mr. Nichols?  It's Dr. Feagel.  I have some bad news.  Missy is hemorraging.  We are prepping her for surgery so that we can stop the bleeding." Dr. Feagel explained.

"Oh my god.  Has she miscarried?" Both Kevin and Marilyn Nichols were wide awake.

"Yes, yes she has due to the hemorraging.  I want you to know that this is a fairly simple procedure, but that your daughter has lost alot of blood."

"Thank you, doctor.  We'll be there as soon as we can." Kevin hung up the phone.  Bob came running up the stairs and Kim came in from her room.

"What's wrong?" Bob immediately asked.

"That was the hospital.  Missy's miscarried and is hemorraging.  They have to go in and stop the bleeding.  They're prepping her for surgery." Mr. Nichols told everyone.

"I'm coming with you." was all Kim said as Bob left to go get changed and her parents got up to change.

"Meet me at my car in five minutes, Kimmy." Bob said.

"Don't drive like a maniac, son.  Turn the CB on.  We'll see you there."

"I'll call Kenny." Mrs. Nichols said.  She dialed her son's number.

"Hello?" Jenn grumbled.

"Jenny, it's Marilyn.  Wake Kenny, it's Missy." Marilyn Nichols was softly crying.

"What is it, mom?" Kenny asked.

"They're taking Missy in for emergency surgery.  She's hemorraging."

"I'll be right there." Kenny said and hung up the phone.

"Marilyn, call Bob's parents too.  They should know." Kevin said as he came out of the bathroom.

"Already dialing...Jason?  It's Marilyn Nichols.  Missy's being prepped for emergency surgery...Bob's already on his way to the hospital and so are we...Yes, yes...thank you...we'll see you there." Marilyn hung up the phone. "I'll be ready in five minutes, Kevin." Marilyn said and disappeared into the bathroom.

"I'll go warm up the car." Kevin disappeared downstairs.

"Kimmy, please don't cry. Missy's gonna be alright." Bob said as they drove away from the house. "Turn the CB on and help me listen for your dad." Bob instructed in a soft voice.

"I'm sorry.  I can't help it.  I wish this wasn't happening." Kim said.  She did what Bob told her.

"I understand.  I feel the same way.  Don't worry.   She'll be fine.  One of the first things that I fell in love with about your sister is that she is a strong person.  You're just like her in many ways, you know.  You're going to be just as beautiful as she is and just as lovely a person too..." Bob was interrupted by PAPADOC on the CB.

"TWIN1, where are you?"

"We just turned onto Main Street.  Are you mobile yet."

"Will be in two minutes.  Listen, your parents and KDOC are on their way there.  Go up to her room and wait for us, okay?"

"We will."

"And be careful."

"Don't worry about me.  I'm driving like I normally do.  It's your younger daughter who needs reassurance."

"Kimmy, don't worry.  Your sister will be okay."

"Thanks, daddy.  I know she will.  We'll leave the CB on until we get there." Kim replied into the mike.

Bob and Kim drove the rest of the way in silence, each wallowed in their own thoughts of Missy.  "PAPADOC.  We're at our destination.  We're going 10-7, we'll see you up there." Bob said into the mike once they reached the hospital.

"10-4, TWIN1.  We'll be there in about 10 minutes. PAPADOC out." Kevin Nichols replied.

"C'mon, Kim.  Let's go on up to Missy's room and wait for her." Bob said.  Kim looked at him, her eyes were puffy.

"I'm really scared, Bob." she admitted.

"I know, I am too.  Lock your door before you shut it, please." Bob asked and they left the car and entered the hospital.

"Kenny, are you sure you don't want me to come with you?  I can get my parents to watch Andy." Jen asked her husband.

"I've got to get there Jen." Kenny really wasn't listening to his wife.

"Fine.  You go on ahead.   As soon as I can drop Andrew off with my parents, I'll be over.  Okay?" Jen suggested, handing him his keys.

"Yes, thank you.  Thank you." Kenny said and looked at his wife.  Tears falling down from his eyes.  Jenny gently wiped them away.

"I know you're afraid for your sister, but remember, she's strong.  She'll be okay.   Remember that I love you and my prayers are with everyone." Jen looked him in the eye.

"You promise you'll get there as soon as you can?" Kenny asked.

"As soon as I possibly can.  You'd better get going.  I'll call my parents.  Give my love to mom and dad." Jen practically pushed him out the front door.  She watched him leave before calling her parents.

"Jason, slow down.  Please!" Anna Cauldwell pleaded with her husband.  They were on the way to the hospital.

"I'm going the speed limit."

"It doesn't feel like it.  Let's get there in one piece, please."

"Yes dear."

"Thank you.  Now, what all did Marilyn tell you?" Anna continued the conversation.

"Just that Missy was headed into emergency surgery and that Bob was already on his way to the hospital."

"Oh, our poor boy.  He's got to be devastated." Anna whispered.

Bob took Kim into Missy's room and then headed for the nurses' station.

"Hi, I'm Melissa Nichols' fianceè, her parents are on their way.  Is there anything you can tell me about her condition?" Bob asked the night duty nurse.

"I'm sorry, all we know right now is that she's in surgery.   Don't worry sir, she's in good hands." the nurse said.

"Thank you.  We'll be in Missy's room."

"If you want to wait in the waiting room next to surgery, you should get back on the elevator, go down to the first floor, make a left out of the elevator and follow the hallway down to the double doors.  The family waiting room is on the right hand side."

"Thank you.  I'll wait until the rest of the family arrives." Bob said, he then went to the vending machine to get two sodas.  Kim was staring out the window when he got back.

"What are you thinking about?"

"The fight Missy and I had a few days ago about A.J.  She was just trying to protect me from getting hurt.  She hardly ever does stuff like that and when she does, she usually means business." Kim said.  She smiled for Bob.

"Give her time, A.J. always was the complete opposite of his brother.  She just has to get to know him.  And you have to take it really slow with him or any other guy you date.  Understand?" Bob handed her the soda.

"Yeah, I do.  Thanks.   How do you know A.J.?" Kim asked.

"I used to go to school with JJ.  JJ and I were pretty good friends in junior high.  He's really changed.  So..." Bob was interrupted by the arrival of Missy's parents and her brother, Kenny.

"Any word?" Mrs. Nichols immediately asked.

"No.  None.  The nurse told me we could wait in the Family waiting room if we wanted." Bob responded.

"That sounds good.  Let's wait for your parents first before we go on down." Mr. Nichols said.

"Kimmy, honey?  Are you okay?"

"Yeah, mom.  I'm fine." Kim assured her mother.  The Cauldwells entered the room.

"No word yet, I'm afraid Jason and Anna.  Thank you for coming." Mr. Nichols said.

"We thought we should be here."

"Let's go to the family waiting room." Bob suggested.  Everyone followed his lead.  Kenny caught up with him.

"Thanks for coming, Ken."

"Hey, I wanted to be here.  Mainly for myself.  I just want Missy to be okay.  As soon as Jenny can find a babysitter, she'll be here as well."

"Good, Missy will be glad to know that everyone supports her." Bob said.

"How are you holding up?  You can be honest with me." Kenny said.

"Can we talk about this later?  My mind is just on Missy right now." Bob said as they entered the elevator.

"Yeah, sure."

"Oh, before I forget.  When I talked to Missy...she called after I went home...she said she wanted the lawyer."

"Good.  Good."

Everyone went into the waiting room and camped out for an hour before Dr. Feagel showed up to talk to them.

"How is she?" Bob asked as soon as he saw the doctor enter the waiting room.  Everyone gathered around Bob and the doctor.

"She's definitely a fighter, no doubt about that.  We stopped the bleeding and repaired the uterus wall.  She's in recovery.  When she wakes up, she'll be really groggy and it may take her a few minutes to realize what's going on.  She also might have a little pain in her stomach area.  She'll be weak for a few days, but she'll be just fine." the doctor explained.

"Can we see her?" Mrs. Nichols asked.

"Only for a few minutes and only you and your husband, and you, Bob.  I know she'd really like to see your face when she wakes up.  Just be very quiet.  Okay?" The three of them shook their heads yes.  "Good then.  Follow me."   Mr. and Mrs. Nichols and Bob all followed Dr. Feagel into the recovery room.  "An orderly will be here shortly to take Missy back to her room.  I'll be in the area until she's back in her room if you need anything." Dr. Feagel said before leaving.

"Missy?  Honey, can you hear me?" Bob whispered into Missy's ear.  He softly brushed her hair back away from her face.

"Why is she hooked up to all these monitors, Kevin?  Didn't Dr. Feagel say that everything went smoothly?" Marilyn whispered to her husband.  She was worried.

"I don't like this.  I'm gonna go find that doctor.  I'll be right back." Kevin said.  He went to look for Dr. Feagel.  Marilyn moved over to the other side of the bed.

"Missy, it's momma.  C'mon, dear.  Wake up, Bob and I want to see your beautiful blue eyes." Marilyn said to her daughter while she stroked her hand.

"She sleeps so peacefully, as if we're at home." Bob said.

"I know.  When she was little, I use to check on her several times.  She was the only one out of all my kids who slept so peacefully and so quietly.   Sometimes I would check to make sure..."

"She was still breathing.  I know, I do that too." Bob finished Mrs. Nichols' sentence.

They sat in silence for a half hour before Mr. Nichols returned.   He told them that Dr. Feagel has assured him that all the monitors and tubes are normal for post-op and that once she wakes up, they'll be removed.

"Bob, we're going to go on out now.  Would you like us to bring you some coffee or anything?" Mr. Nichols asked.  He put a hand on Bob's shoulder.

"No, thanks.  I'm fine.  Please let my parents know that." Bob said, never taking an eye off of Missy.

"Okay, son.  I will." The Nichols' went out to the waiting area.

"Dad?  Is she awake yet?" Kenny asked.

"No, she's not and I don't like it.  Your mother was awake by now when she had to undergo surgery."

"Kevin, don't worry.  She'll be okay." Marilyn said.  Kim was huddled in a corner chair away from everyone.  Marilyn turned to look at her youngest child.  "Kimmy, honey, let's you and I go for a walk, okay?" Marilyn asked her youngest daughter.

"Alright, mom." Kim said and left with her mother.  Mr. Nichols was talking with Mr. and Mrs. Cauldwell.

"Jason, Bob isn't taking this well.  We begged him to come home with us earlier so that he would get some rest.   Now, he's afraid to leave her side."

"The best we can do is let him be, Kevin.  Bob is very independent and when he wants and needs to lean on us, he will.  He knows, deep in his heart that there was nothing he could have done to prevented all of this, it'll just take some time to surface for him." Jason replied.

"I'm going to go call Kerri's house.  Rick should know about this.  They should be up by now anyway." Mrs. Cauldwell said.

"Missy?  C'mon, honey.   It's time to wake up.  Show me how beautiful your eyes are." Bob pleaded with Missy. Her head moved to the side and she started to groan.  "Missy?  Open your eyes honey." Bob pleaded again.

Missy tried to focus in on the voice she heard.  She didn't recognize it as Bob's.  She opened her eyes.

"C'mon, Missy.  Look at me, honey.  You can do it." Bob kept pleading with her.

"Bob?" she finally whispered.  Bob smiled.

"Of course, it's me, sweetheart.  It's about time you woke up."

"Where am I?"

"Sshh, don't try to talk.  You're in post-op.  Let me go get the doctor." Bob went to leave.  Missy held his hand tighter.

"Please don't leave me." she begged.

"I'm just going to get the doctor.  I'll be right back." Bob said.  Missy closed her eyes.  The light was too bright for her.

"Nurse, nurse?  Could you page Dr. Feagel for me?  Missy is waking up." Bob asked the first nurse that he came in contact with.

"Right away." The nurse said and he went back to Missy.

Missy was crying when he arrived.

"Hey, hey?  What are all these tears for?" Bob asked.

"I've lost the baby, haven't I?" Missy asked.

"Yeah, and we almost lost you.  You were hemorraging, so Dr. Feagel had to perform emergency surgery on you to stop the bleeding." Bob didn't lie to her.

"I'm sorry, Bobby.  I really wanted to have our baby." Missy stopped crying.

"We'll have plenty of opportunities to have more children.  Concentrate on getting better so we can work on that.  Okay?" Bob said.  He wiped her hair away from her face and swept the tears away from both his cheeks and hers.  Dr. Feagel came in, followed by Missy's father.

"Glad to see you're finally awake, young lady.  How are you feeling?" Dr. Feagel asked as she took Missy's vital signs.

"Sore and thirsty." Missy said.

"Are you sore around your stomach area?"

"Mostly, but the rest of my body aches too."

"That's a reaction to the anesthesia.  We'll give you some pain medication for the soreness and some water as well.  You hang in there and get some rest.  Some orderlies will be in in a few minutes to take you back to your room.  A nurse will take all these wires off of you before you go back to your room, however, we're going to keep a monitor on your blood pressure.  It's still a little low.  Okay?"

"Yes."

"Okay.  I'll see you this afternoon.  We'll talk more then." Dr. Feagel patted the back of Missy's hand and left the room.

"Hey, there, daughter." Mr. Nichols said.  He had a smile on his face.

"Daddy!  Where's mom?" Missy asked.

"Talking to Kimberly.  You've got Kimberly really upset about you.  But, she's okay." Mr. Nichols sat down on the bed.

"Does everyone know?"

"Bob's mother went to call Rick and Kerri, but, yeah... everyone knows."

"Tell everyone to go home, please.  For me.  I'm not ready to see anyone but Bob and you and mommy.  I can't handle it." Missy said.

"Sure, honey.  I'll tell everyone.  They'll understand.   Your mother and I will meet you up in your room, okay?"

"Sure, daddy.  Thanks." Missy said.  Mr. Nichols left the room.  A nurse came in.

"OOPS.  My cue to leave.   I'll see you back up in your room shortly.   I love you." Bob said and kissed her on the cheek."

"I love you, too.  Tell Kimmy that I'm okay."

Bob left and joined everyone in the waiting room.  He went to Kim first.

"Kimmy?  Missy says she's okay.  How are you?" Bob asked.

"Better.  Can I see her?"

"She's not up for visitors.  She told your dad that she really couldn't handle seeing anyone right now. But, I bet if you stop by later this afternoon, she'll be happy to see you.  The best thing you could do for her is to get some rest of your own." Bob said.

"Daddy said that we'll be going home shortly.  What about you, you need your rest as well."

"I'm going to go home a little later.  I don't want to leave Missy just yet." Bob said.

"Okay. Will you tell Missy that I'm really sorry about the fight we had the other day."

"Don't worry.  She's forgotten about it." Bob said.

"I think I'm going to like having you for a brother-in-law." Kim said and laughed.

"Oh really.  Watch out.  You never know kiddo."

"Kimberly, come along.  We're going to go see your sister real quick before going home."

While everyone was in the waiting room, a kidnapping was taking place in post-op...

"She's out like a light.  Let's get this finished.  Grant said he'd meet us at the cottage at 3:00." a female dressed in a nurse's uniform said.

"I'll meet you at the designated place.  Go move the vehicle there now." a male, dressed in an orderly's outfit, said.  The nurse had unfastened the blood pressure cuff and cleanly took out the I.V. that was on Missy.

"Grant said to be careful and gentle with her.  If anything happens to her, we're history." The nurse said before leaving.

"Don't worry, I'll pretend that she was my girl." the male said.  He wheeled her down the hall to the second exit door and picked her up and pushed the gurney down the hall a little ways before disappearing down the stairs to the waiting car and away from the hospital.

"Bob?  Are you coming?" Kim asked as she stood up.

"In a minute.  I have to make a phone call first." Bob said.  Rick and Kerri came into the waiting room just then.

"How's Missy?"

"She's going to be just fine.  They're taking her up to her own room now." Bob said.

"Could we see her?" Kerri asked Bob.

"I'm sorry, Kerri.  Missy's not ready to see anyone except for her parents and me.  Maybe tomorrow?" Bob said.

"Okay, then.  I'll wait until tomorrow." Kerri said.

"Are you going home anytime soon?" Rick asked.

"Yeah, after Missy's settled back in her room.  I might go into work this afternoon.  It's gotta be piling up." Bob said.

"Uncle Joe said not to worry about it.  You've earned some personal days so take them.  The guys all understand what you and Missy are going thru and they want to see you two work this out."

Mr. and Mrs. Nichols came over to him.

"Bob, we're going up to Missy's room now, are you coming with?" Marilyn Nichols asked.

"Yeah, I'm coming.  Rick, thanks.  I'll see you later." Bob said and left with the Nichols.

"Ricky, thanks for coming over."

"Thanks for calling us, mom.  We wanted to be here.  We saw Ken's wife, Jenny, in the lobby." Rick explained.

"You saw Jenny?  Where?" Ken asked.  He overheard their conversation.

"In the lobby about 20 minutes ago?" Rick commented.

"Excuse me." Ken abruptly left the room.  Ken went out to the nurses' station to call home.

"Hello?"

"Jenny?  It's me, Ken.   Are you coming to the hospital?" Ken asked.

"I'm just about to leave.  What's wrong?"

"Kerri and Rick said they just saw you in the lobby."

"No, I'm here.  My mother came over.  How's Missy?"

"Doing fine.  I'll see you when you get here." Ken said and hung up the phone.

"I'm going to go start the car, Marilyn.  C'mon, Kim." Kevin Nichols said.  Bob, Kim, and Marilyn and Kevin Nichols had just gotten off of the elevator on Missy's floor.

"Okay, I'm just going to go check on Missy, and then I'll be down.   I won't be long." Marilyn said.

"Bob, we'll see you for dinner?  Your parents are coming over.  Your father and I are going to talk about renovations to the garage."

"Sure.  I'll call you before I leave here." Bob said to Mr. Nichols.

Bob and Marilyn Nichols waited until Kevin and Kim got back on the elevator before making their way to Missy's room.  On their way there, an orderly ran past them to the nurse's desk.

"Call security.  We have a problem." the orderly said to the nurse.

"What's wrong, Jimmy?"

"I went down to post-op to bring Melissa Nichols back up and she wasn't there.  Even the bed she was on is missing."

"Stay here.  I'll page security." the nurse said.  "Security to seventh floor Nurses station.  Security to seventh floor Nurses station."

"How could this have happened?" Jimmy asked.

"Excuse me, what's going on here?  Where's Missy?" Bob asked.  He and Mrs. Nichols had overheard the conversation.

"We don't know.  She wasn't in post-op when I went down to get her and she's not up here.  I've looked all over the surgical unit.  She's gone." Jimmy declared.

"That can't be!  How can someone disappear from the hospital?  She's too weak to walk on her own." Mrs. Nichols said.

"Oh my god! Someone's taken her." Bob declared.

"Please, calm down. I've just called the administrator and Dr. Feagel.  They should be here any minute."

"Bob, please go get Kenny and Kevin. I need them." Mrs. Nichols asked.

"I can page them." the nurse said.

"Please do.  They are Kenneth and Kevin Nichols." Mrs. Nichols stated.  The nurse paged them and Bob and Mrs. Nichols went over and sat in the waiting area.

"How could this have happened?  How?" Bob was shouting aloud.

"Bob, calm down."

"JJ Grant's behind this. I just know it." Bob said.   He began pacing the floor.  Kenny came out of the elevator.

"What's going on?"

"Missy's gone.  Missing." Mrs. Nichols said.  The administrator and Dr. Feagel came over.

"I'm so sorry about this, Mrs. Nichols.  We've got security searching every floor and we have called the police as a precaution." Dr. Feagel said.

"I want you to get every available staff member to look for my sister, Karl, every single one.  C'mon, Bob, let's go find Missy." Kenny said and they took off toward the stairs.  Kim and Mr. Nichols exited out of the elevator.

"What's going on?" Kevin Nichols asked.

"We believe someone has taken your daughter out of the hospital, Kevin." Karl said.

"Daddy?  Mom?" Kim stared at them blankly.

"Kimmy, everything will be okay." Marilyn Nichols said and grabbed her daughter into a bear hug.

"Let's go into the waiting room where we can all sit down and talk." Dr. Feagel said.  She instructed the nurses at the nurses station to direct the police and family members to the waiting room.

"I should have stayed in post-op with her, Kenny.  I didn't feel right about leaving her alone." Bob said as they searched the stairwells.

"We'll find her, Bobby.  Don't worry.  And don't blame yourself.  Keep your head straight so that we can find her." Kevin told him.

"You know JJ Grant took her." Bob said as they walked out into the lobby.

"We need proof." Kenny said.

"Here's your proof." Jenny said as she and A.J. Grant came into the lobby.

"Kenny, JJ left this on the kitchen table this morning with his parole band.  I tried to reach Kim or your parents and then I remembered that Kim said that Missy was in the hospital.   I hope you don't mind my coming." A.J. gave Kenny a note that JJ had written to the Grants.

"Let me see that." Bob took the note out of Kenny's hands.   Bob read it and kept the contents to himself.

"No, AJ.  I don't mind.  Kim is up on the seventh floor.  Maybe you can calm Kim down a little.  Why don't we all go back up there and find out what's going on." Kenny suggested.

"What is going on here, Kenny?" Jen asked.

"Someone has taken Missy from the hospital. We've been all over the hospital.  There's no sign of her anywhere." Kenny said.  Jenny put her hand up to his cheek.

"Oh, honey.  I'm so sorry.  I wish I could've gotten here sooner." Jenny said.  They embraced.

"AJ.  What in the hell does your brother think he's doing?" Bob asked.

"I really don't know.  My parents have moved me into my grandparents house because of what he's done.   They're afraid of the influence he might have over me.  He has really gone too far." AJ said.

"Let's get up there.  I'm sure everyone's wondering where Bob and I got to." Kenny suggested.  The four of them rode up in the elevator together.

"How is she?" the man asked the woman concerning Missy.

"Not good.  I can't believe Grant wanted us to take her now.  She's recovering from surgery.  She has a fever.   How long before we reach the cabin?" the nurse was in the back seat with Missy while the man drove.

"Another hour or so.  Do you want me to call Grant on the car phone?"

"No...let's just get to the cabin and get her settled.  Damn Grant!  We shouldn't have agreed to do this.  We should have waited until she was okay to travel."

"Are you worried?"

"Yes.  If we don't get to the cabin and get this fever down, she could very likely die and then we would die.   Grant said that nothing had better happen to her."

"It won't.  We'll be at the cabin soon." the man said and concentrated on the road ahead once more.

"It's really important that we alert the media on this, Kevin.   Missy is very weak and very ill.  The only way for her to get better is for us to get her back." Karl Anderson said.

"Let's do it then." Kevin said.

"Do what?" Bob said as he, Kenny, Jenny, and AJ entered the room.

"AJ!" Kim said and ran over to him.  He embraced her.

"Go on TV and alert the media about Missy." Kevin Nichols said.

"AJ found this at his parents' house this morning, along with JJ's parole bracelet." Bob handed the note and the bracelet to Kevin.  "JJ's got her.  We have to find them." Bob insisted.  The police came into the room.

"Thank goodness you're finally here." Marilyn Nichols exclaimed.  She was clutching Missy's robe to her chest.

"We got here as soon as we could.  I'm Leutenant Detective Randy McNeal and this is Detective Charlie McFadden." The police detective said and introduced himself.

"I'm Karl Anderson, hospital administrator and this is Dr. Feagel.  This is Mr. and Mrs. Nichols." Karl said and pointed to both Marilyn and Kevin.

"What happened here?" Leutenant Detective McNeal asked.

"Apparently a man dressed as an orderly and a woman dressed as a nurse went into post-op and took Melissa right after the family and I left." Dr. Feagel explained.  Detective McFadden began writing in his notebook.

"Do you know of anyone who might want to take her?" the leutenant asked another question.

"We know exactly who did it." Bob responded.

"Really?  Who?" Detective McFadden turned to look at Bob.

"JJ Grant." Kevin Nichols said, "His younger brother found this note and the probation bracelet this morning on the kitchen table." Kevin handed over the note and the bracelet to the detectives.

"Very well.  We'll put out an APB on JJ Grant and Melissa.  Does anyone have a recent picture of her?  It would help with the case."

Kim produced a picture from her purse.

"This was just taken two months ago." She handed the picture over to him.

"Thank you.  Mr. and Mrs. Nichols?  Would you come down to the station with me?  McFadden is going to talk with the persons on duty in post-op and we just need to do some paperwork."

"Certainly." Kevin looked at Kenny and Bob.

"Don't worry about Kim.  We'll take her home and keep her with us until you come for her." Kenny assured his father.

"I'll make sure AJ gets home." Bob said.

"Here are the keys to the house.  Go there in case someone tries to call, okay?" Kevin asked Bob.

"Sure, Kevin.  I will.   We'll see you soon." Bob said and gave both Kevin and Marilyn a hug.  Kevin and Marilyn Nichols left with Leutenant Detective McNeal.

"Kim...are you okay?  Is there anything I can do for you?" AJ asked her.  They were sitting on the radiator.

"No...there isn't anything anyone can do for me except to bring my sister back.  Why did he do it, AJ?  Why can't he just leave her alone?  Why can't he leave you alone?  Why can't he just leave us all alone?" Kim cried.  AJ wrapped his arms around her.

"He hasn't changed at all. I'm sorry he's doing this to everyone.  He's not the same JJ I knew when I was really little.  I don't know what's come over him.  I'm sorry." AJ whispered to her.

Rick and Kerri came rushing into the room.

"What happened, Bob?  We just saw the Nichols leaving with the police." Rick asked.

"JJ Grant took Missy from Post-op." Bob replied.

"Oh, god." Kerri said and turned her head into Rick's chest.  Rick put one arm around his brother and the other around Kerri.

"What can we do to help?" Rick asked.

"Um, I'm going back to Missy's house in case anyone calls.   Kim is going with Ken and Jen.  Oh, I've got to get AJ home." Bob said, staring at the floor.

"I'll go with you to the house.  Kerri? Hon, can you take AJ home?" Rick suggested.

"Sure, if it's alright with him and Kim." Kerri said. They all looked at AJ and Kim.

"I don't know... I don't want to leave Kim like this." AJ stated.

"It's okay.  You've got to let your parents know what has happened.  I'll call you when I get back to my house." Kim managed to say.

"Are you sure, Kim.  AJ can come with us.  We don't mind." Kenny suggested.

"Is it okay with both of you if he does?" Kim looked at her brother and sister-in-law.

"Yes, Kimmy.  It is." Jenny assured Kim with a smile.

"Okay, then it's settled.  AJ and Kim will go with Kenny and Jen and Kerri and I will meet you at the house." Rick said.

"Okay.  Let's go.  I can't be in here if Missy's out there somewhere.  I'll be on channel 2 on the CB." Bob said and sped out of there before everyone else could.

"Uh, Kerri.  I'm not sure if there's any ice tea or anything made at home, but everything is in the pantry, and there might be some cookies left hidden behind the large popcorn bins." Kim said.

"Okay, I'm sure I'll find it." Kerri said as they all left Missy's room and headed for their cars.

When Bob got to the Nichols', the first thing he did after unlocking the door was turn on the CB.  He then went into the den and got the picture of he and Missy in front of the weeping willow tree and took it with him back out to breakfast nook, where they had placed the CB.  Rick was talking to Kenny.

"KDOC...what's your current 20?"

"Approximately 5 minutes from my home 20."

"Okay, do you have the home base hooked up?"

"My better half did that this morning."

"Better keep her if she does stuff like that without asking.   Listen, TWIN1 wants to keep the landline open, so keep the base tuned to the normal channel."

"Will do.  Oh, Kim says that there is a scanner out on the back porch."

"Great! I'll go get it.  Rick, tell Kim I said thanks!" Bob went out to the porch.

"Thanks, Kim.  TWIN1 looking for it now.  We'll be on the side." Rick said. Rick parked the car and went into the house. "Did you find it Bob?" he asked his brother.

"Yeah. I think so." Bob said as he returned with the scanner.   "I found the adapter too." Bob plugged it in and got it working.  Kerri came out of the pantry.

"Kim was right.  I found cookies and some ice tea mix too.  I haven't looked in the refridgerator yet.  Would either of you like something to eat?"

"Not right now, thanks.  I've got to call dad and let him know what's happening." Bob said and dialed his parents' number.  His mother picked up the phone.

"Mom!  Where's dad...Missy's been kidnapped by JJ Grant." Bob said as soon as he heard her voice.

"Hold on...I'll get him." Anna Cauldwell said and dropped the phone, "Jason!  Jason!  Pick up the phone...hurry.  It's Bob...Missy's been kidnapped!" She screamed.

"Hello?  Bobby?" Mr. Cauldwell asked.

"Dad...I need you.  Missy's in trouble and I don't know what to do."

"Where are you?"

"Missy's parents' place."

"I'm on my way." Mr. Cauldwell hung up the phone.  Bob broke down and cried.

"I'm so scared, Rick.  There's no telling what JJ will do to her." Bob admitted to his brother.

"We have to think positive.  Missy's going to be okay."

"You're going to have to go to the drugstore.  Her temperature still hasn't gone down.  Take the truck.  The less the car is seen the better." the nurse who was taking care of Missy gave the man a twenty dollar bill and a list of what to get.  She waited until he left before waking Missy.

"Melissa...don't worry.  I'm here to help you.  I'm going to get you out of here.  I'm with the FBI." The nurse/FBI agent explained.  As she gently lifted Missy off the cot that they had put her on, Missy moaned.

"Just hold on a little while longer." the agent asked and took Missy to the car where she made her comfortable in the back seat.  The agent picked up the phone.

"This is Agent Morris working on the Grant case.  I've got the girl.  Move in.  I've got to get the girl to a hospital.  She's running a really high fever.  Dispatch an ambulance and the state troopers to the I80 bypass, Reading exit.  We'll be there in twenty minutes.  Grant is in route to the cabin.  Decoys are in place." the agent spoke into the phone.  Missy continued to moan.

"Rick?  Bob?  There's an FBI car in front of the house." Kerri said as she came back into the kitchen.

"What?" the guys said together and than went to the front door. Kerri was right.  The sign on the door said FBI.

"I'm calling the police station and getting Missy's parents back here." Kerri immediately picked up the phone to call information.  Bob opened the door.

"Can I help you?" he asked the men.

"We are with the FBI. I'm Agent Jon Campbell and this is my partner, Agent Frank James. We are looking for Mr. and Mrs. Nichols and Bob Cauldwell." the agent asked.

"What is this about?" Rick asked.

"Melissa Nichols."

"I'm Bob Cauldwell. Is she okay?  Have you found her?" Bob asked.

"She is being taken to a hospital.  She has a really high fever."

"Rick! Someone's at the back door with a gun." Kerri screamed as she dropped the phone.

"Get down!" an agent yelled. Bob, Rick, and Kerri all fell to the floor as the agents ran past them.  Shots were fired.

"Grant.  We've got you cornered.  Give up!"

"No!  I want Melissa Nichols and I want her now!  She belongs with me.  None of you had the right to take her away from me."

"Freeze, Grant.  This is the FBI.  Freeze or we'll shoot!" Agent Campbell shouted.  Agent James motioned for Bob, Rick, and Kerri to leave the house.  They obeyed the lawmen.

"McFadden! McNeal! Get over to the Nichols' house immediately.  The FBI is there along with Grant!" the desk sargeant yelled. Kevin and Marilyn Nichols overheard him yell.

"Oh, my god!  The kids are there..." Marilyn Nichols gasped.

"We have to get to them." Kevin began to speak.

"You can ride with us.  But you must remain in the car.  We don't need to worry about you two." McNeal said.  All four of them left the precinct.

An ambulance and the state police were waiting for Agent Morris and Melissa at the off ramp.

"She just had surgery at Memorial in Brady Mill.  She's running a high fever and moaning.  Get her out of here fast." Agent Morris yelled at the paramedics as she got out of the car.

"Bob?  Mom?" Missy began to moan.

"Melissa?  The paramedics are going to take you to the hospital now.  I'll be along shortly."

"Pam?"

"Tim. Good to see you. Any word on JJ Grant?" Agent Pam Morris asked her colleague, Trooper Tim Matthews.

"Something's going on at the Nichols' home.  The scanner just went off.  How's the girl?"

"Not good.  I hope they capture JJ Grant alive, just so I can see his face in court and behind bars.   Listen, I'm going to go to the hospital with Melissa and notify her parents from there.  Keep me posted about the situation with Grant?" she asked.

"Yes.  And don't forget dinner at your brother's place tonight." Tim grinned.  Tim and Pam were husband and wife although Pam still used her maiden name.

"I won't.  I'll be there.  7:30 sharp." Pam blew him a kiss and left with the ambulance.

"What in carnation!" Jason Cauldwell declared as he pulled onto the Nichols' roadway.

"There's the boys." Anna Cauldwell pointed out.  Bob, Rick, and Kerri were seated on the sidewalk behind Rick's car.

"Your parents just arrived." Kerri pointed out.

"Are you okay?" Rick asked Kerri.

"I'm alright." Kerri assured him.  Rick got up and ran over to his parents' car.  Bob stayed with Kerri.

"Hi, dad.  Hi, mom.   The feds are inside with JJ Grant.  He's staged a stand-off.  All we know is that Melissa is being taken to a hospital.  We don't know where yet.  I'm really worried about Bob." Rick was explaining to them when they heard Kerri shout, "No, Bob!  Get back here!   Bob!" She screamed.  Jason Cauldwell grabbed onto Rick.

"Don't go son.  Warn the Feds that Bob went around back.  I'll go get Kerri.  Anna, you stay down." Jason took control of what little he could.  Rick went over to the feds car and relayed the message over their CB channel and scanner.

Kerri was hysterical when she got into the car with Anna and Jayson.

"Kerri, calm down.  Everything will be okay.  It will be alright." Anna tried to calm Kerri down.  Rick came back to the car five minutes later.

"I tried to stop him. I really did. I didn't know what else to do." Kerri cried to Rick.

"I know.  Don't worry.  He'll be alright."

"JJ!  It's Bob Cauldwell!   Drop your weapon!  I know where Missy is.  I'll take you to her." Bob yelled. He positioned himself behind JJ behind the trashcans and the neighbors yard. He distracted JJ long enough for Agent James to knock JJ's gun away from him.

The police and Missy's parents showed up just as Bob yelled.   A news crew had also pulled up.

"Kevin!  Over here!" Jason yelled to Mr. and Mrs. Nichols.

"What's going on?" Kevin asked.

"JJ showed up looking for Melissa. The Feds were already here talking with Bob when he showed up. The kids managed to get out, but Bob went around back."

"Is there any word on Missy?" Marilyn Nichols asked.

"She's at a hospital somewhere." Rick said. They watched as the feds brought JJ Grant out of the house. Bob was behind them.  Anna jumped out of the car and ran to her son.

"Thank go you're all right!  Your father and I were worried." she cried.

"I had to stop him, mom. As much as I use to consider him a friend.  He's not the same person anymore. I had to do it for Missy's sake as well as mine." Bob hugged his mother tightly.

"Thanks for helping out Bob. We really appreciate it." Agent James commended Bob.

"No problem.  Could you please tell me where Missy is?" Bob asked the Agent.

"Reading Memorial. They're going to stabilize her and bring her back down to Brady Hill Memorial. She should be back here sometime later tonight unless there are complications."

"I have to go to her.  Do you need me for anything."

"We'll get your statement later.  Take her parents with you.  Okay?"

"Thanks.  Dad, can I borrow your car?" Bob asked.

"Here, drive safely."

"I promise."  Bob ran over to his father's car and explained to Missy's parents that he was taking them to see Missy.

An hour later, amongst many media representatives, Bob and Missy's parents arrived at the hospital.

"Bob, how's it feel to help capture your best friend?  Mr. and Mrs. Nichols, is there any word on your daughter's condition." were just some of the questions that reporters bombarded them with.

"No comment." was all they replied as they rushed into the hospital and straight for the emergency room.

"Excuse me," Mr. Nichols said to the receptionist. "I believe my daughter, Missy Nichols, has been brought here."

"Why, yes, she has. I'll go get the doctor for you. Please have a seat." the receptionist quickly went into the examining area.  Mr. and Mrs. Nichols sat down while Bob paced back and forth in the waiting room.  A few minutes later the receptionist returned with the doctor.

"Hello, I'm Doctor Frederick Nash.  Melissa is doing as well as can be expected. I've started her on an IV and some antibiotics to bring down the fever. I won't lie to you, she's gone several hours without post-op treatment. Until we get that fever down, she's listed as critical."

"Has she said anything?" Bob asked.

"She keeps mumbling for Bob. By the looks of it, I'd give a pretty good guess that you're him."

"Can I see her, can we see her?" Bob nodded his head yes and asked the doctor.

"Yes, but don't expect much. She's not conscious and we really should give her time to rest and regain her strength. C'mon, I'll show you all where we have her. Right now she's still in Emergency, however, once we get her fever down to 104 from 106, we'll move her up to Intensive Care. I won't lie to you, her condition is very critical."

"You said 106 degrees, correct?" Bob asked.

"Yes, she's a true fighter because in all other instances, she would be dead. However, her temperature has come down to 105 since she first arrived here. We're taking her temperature every 15 minutes or so."

"Thank you, doctor." All three of them said.  They followed him back when Mr. Nichols remembered that he wanted to call Kenny and Kim and let them know what's going on.

"Can you direct me to a phone, I really should call our other children and update them." he asked the doctor.

"There is a waiting area across from where your daughter is, you can use the phone in there." the doctor pointed out and showed them all the room. A nurse was sitting with Missy and wiping her forehead with a cold compress.

"Do you mind if I do that?" Mrs. Nichols asked, "You don't have to leave." she said to the nurse.

"No problem. I'll be right outside if you need me." the nurse said.

"I'm going to call everyone." Kevin said as he stood at the doorway.  Bob went to the other side of the bed and took hold of Missy's hand.

Kevin turned around and went into the other room.

"She'll be okay Mrs. Nichols.  She just has to be." Bob whispered.

"She'll be just fine.  We'll all be just fine.  You'll see, Robert, you'll see." Mrs. Nichols explained as she changed compresses on Missy's forehead.   The nurse came back in to take her temperature.
