“Missy, it’s me. Pick up the phone.” Bob said into the answering machine.

              “Bobbie?” Missy answered the phone.

“Hey! How come you’re not next door, enjoying food and fun?” Bob asked in a whisper. She didn’t hear the door open downstairs so she didn’t hear Bob come in the house.

“I didn’t want to miss your call.” she told him.

“Fibber...Happy Thanksgiving.” Bob tried not to sound happy.

“Same to you. How are the talks going?” she asked.

“Good. I have two more meetings for Tuesday and Wednesday.”

“So what are you going to do for the next four days?” she asked.

“I thought I’d spend them with you.” Bob said louder, away from the phone. Missy looked up and couldn’t believe what she saw.

“Bob!” she screamed and ran to him, almost knocking him over.

“Honey, I’m home.” Bob said as he hugged her and kissed her. They didn’t let go of each other for a long time.

“I’ve missed you so much.” Missy finally said.

              “So I’ve heard.”

“How long have you been home?”

“About a half hour. But Rick picked me up and filled me in on all your shenanigans. Let’s see, according to Kerri, you’ve got your gown and veil, your mom’s dress, my mom’s dress, and the bridesmaids gowns as well as your dad’s tux and your nephew’s tux. You’ve ordered the invitations and the flowers and you bought me some new shirts.”

              “So I been busy.”

“Yeah, but you wouldn’t let JR or Rick tag along.”

“There’s nothing to worry about. JJ was transferred out of state on Tuesday. Everything’s been okay, but nothing’s normal when you’re not here.”

“I didn’t come home to disagree, I came home to see you because I missed you. Very much.” Bob said.

“I missed you to. When do you have to leave?”

“Tomorrow morning. Rick is taking me back to the airport so you can get some sleep. Ah! No arguments.” Bob told her.

“Well then, I guess I’d better share you with everyone else.” Missy said and led him to the door.

“Not just yet. Come here.” he said and pulled her back into an embrace. They kissed passionately until a knock on the door interrupted them. It was Bob’s mother.

“Well? Are you going to even say hello to your mother?” she said when Bob answered the door.

“I’m sorry mom. Where were my manners?” Bob said and gave his mother a hug.

“So are you guys going to come over and be sociable or stay here and be snobs?”

“Actually we thought we’d go out to the back yard and make love in front of everyone.” Bob said quite seriously.

“Robert!” both women said in shock. He laughed.

“We’ll be over in a few minutes, ma.” Bob said and as soon as his mother closed the door, he turned back to Missy and again shared passionate kisses with her.

“Dinner is ready, everybody come and get a seat.” Marilyn Nichols announced almost two hours later. Bob and Missy stayed in the living room a few extra minutes.

“Glad you came over?” Bob asked.

“Glad you came home.” Missy smiled for him.

“Don’t you know that I would do everything in my power to spend every holiday with you?” he asked.

“Now I do.” Missy said and kissed him.

“You are my world, Missy. Nothing can keep me from you.” Bob said and meant every word of it.

“Would you two stop being so lovey-dovey and get out here so dad can carve the turkey!” Kenny came into the living room and interrupted them. Reluctantly, Missy and Bob joined everyone in the dining room.

“Well, Bob, I for one am sure glad you came home. This is the first day I’ve seen Missy for more than a few seconds since she and I went looking for a wedding dress.” Mrs. Nichols said after her husband had said the prayer.

“Mother! Would you please just drop it? He knows how miserable I’ve been.” Missy requested.

“Did you find a dress?” Mrs. Cauldwell asked.

“Definitely. My first fitting is next week. Wanna come?” she asked.

              “May I?”

“Of course. It’s next Thursday at 5.” Missy said. Conversations were buzzing about once the food had begun passing around. Kenny and Kevin talking about something that happened at the hospital the other day, Rick and Jason, Jr. talking about the football game they were watching earlier that day, and all the women talking about the wedding.

“Do you have to leave in the morning?” Missy asked after everyone had left and they had gone back to their house.

“Yeah. I’ve been invited to a dinner party for one of my clients for tomorrow night and I can’t miss it. I wish you could come, but I know you’re still not allowed to fly.”

“Next time. Do you need clothes washed?” she asked.

“Yeah, I guess we’d better do that.” Bob said before he kissed her. They spent the night doing his laundry and repacking his bags and just spending time together.

“Honey, I’m leaving.” Bob said at 6am the next morning.

              “So soon?” she asked.

“Yeah. I’ll call you later. Get some sleep. I love you.”

“I love you.” Missy said. Bob took a stuffed teddy bear from the closet and placed it in bed next to Missy.

“Missy! Missy! Let’s go. Bob’s flight gets in in an hour.” Rick said as he entered her apartment. She had the radio on in the spare room as she was painting it. Rick turned off the radio and startled her.

“Oh, Rick. What time is it?” she asked.

“Time to go. Hurry up and jump in the shower. Bob’s flight is due to arrive in an hour. I’ll clean up in here.” Rick replied and shooed Missy out of the room. An hour and ten minutes later they arrived to mayhem.

“Excuse me, are you waiting for a flight from Paris?” a person from USAir asked them as they walked over to the counter.

“Yes, USAir 327. It was due in ten minutes ago.”

The employee motioned for a security guard.

“Would you please follow this gentleman to a waiting room.”

“What’s going on?” Missy asked. “Please tell me Bob’s okay.” Missy wanted an answer.

“Miss, please follow me. All your questions will be answered.” the security officer replied. Missy looked at Rick and grabbed his arm tightly. She was really worried. The security guard showed them to a meeting room. There were at least 40 to 50 other people in the room as well. An airport executive came over to them.

“Good afternoon, my name is Katie. The plane is coming in with just one engine and it’s flight gear won’t come down. It’s due to arrive in approximately 20 minutes. I want to prepare you for what might or might not happen. What is the passenger names that you are waiting for?”

“Robert Cauldwell.” Rick replied. Missy couldn’t speak. She was shaking badly. Rick had his arms around her as they stood there listening to Katie.

“The airport is prepared for a belly landing and we have directed the plane onto another runway course that ends next to a field. When the plan lands, emergency shoots will be put in place...”

“What if the plane doesn’t land in tact?” Missy asked.

“Then the rescue teams will divide to get to the passengers as soon as possible. Please, miss, the staff on that plane will do everything in its power to assure as safe a landing as possible. We ask that you wait in here until the passengers are off the plane and safe. There is coffee, tea, sodas and sandwiches over in the corner. Please help yourself and try not to think the worst. My name again is Katie, and if there is anything you need, please ask me. If you can’t find me, anyone wearing a white badge like mine will help you too. Okay?” Katie asked them. Missy nodded and Rick shook her hand and thanked her. As soon as she was gone, Missy turned and buried her head in Rick’s chest to hide the sound of her sobs.

“Sssh, it’ll be okay. C’mon, let’s go sit down on the couch over there.”

“We were going to go look at rings tonight. Did he tell you?” Missy asked once they sat down.

“Said you deserved the biggest rock he could find that could fit on your tiny hand. Wanted me and Kerri to go with you two for dinner beforehand, but I declined. Kerri and I aren’t doing so good.” Rick said.

“Kerri won’t talk about it. What’s happening?” Missy asked.

“I think she and I are on the verge of breaking up and I can’t say that I’m heart broken over it. I’ve given her space, time, patience, love, and understanding and still I feel that I’m losing her. When we’re together, she’s more occupied with work or your wedding. It takes two to make a relationship work and I’m the one doing all the work.” Rick replied.

“I’m sorry. I made her manager of the store, I didn’t think she’d ignore you.”

“It’s alright, I want her to be successful, just not at the expense of me.”

“I hate this. You and Kim at odds and Bob on a plane waiting to crash land.” Missy put her head in her hands.

“Don’t think the worst. We have to think positive. Okay? Everything will be just fine. How about a cup of tea to calm your nerves some?” Rick asked. She nodded. He handed her a handkerchief before going to get her some tea.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the plane is on the ground and rescue workers are on the scene. Please, please stay calm and in this room until further notice.” Katie announced 35 minutes later. People who were waiting for loved ones had begun bonding with one another and continued to do so at this time. One of the men demanded that televisions be brought it since the plane crash had probably made the news and if he had to stay in the room, he wanted to see what was happening at the site. Katie had several TV’s rolled in and connected to the cable stations and news stations. It was another hour before passengers started streaming into the room and into the arms of their loved ones. A stewardess came up to Missy and Rick.

“Excuse me, is your name Missy?” she asked.

              “Yes, yes it is.”

“I’m Stella. Your fiancee wanted me to assure you that he’s fine and he’ll see you soon.”

              “Where is he?” she asked.

“An attendant is patching up some scratches and then he’ll be up. He kept everyone calm by telling them about you and how much he loved you.” the stewardess said.

“Stella, this is his brother, Rick. Thank you so much for seeking us out and letting us know he was okay.” Missy hugged Stella. Bob was the last passenger into the room. Miraculously no one was seriously hurt in the crash. Rick, Missy, and Bob all broke into tears when they saw one another. Missy ran to Bob.

“I’m so glad you’re okay. So glad.” Missy said as she hugged him.

“Sssh, sweetheart. It’s okay. I’m alright. You okay?” he asked. Rick came over to them. All three of them had a group hug and a prayer. “Let’s go home so I can take a shower. We have rings to shop for.”

“No, you’re going to the hospital as a precaution. You hit your head pretty good.” Stella said as she came over to them.

“You hit your head?” Missy asked, walking behind him to examine the back of his head.

“You heard her man...let’s go.” Rick said.

“Thanks, Stella. Now they’re going to baby me.” Bob said as Missy led him away with Rick right behind them.

“I’ll go get the car and then we’re going to the hospital. Rick, can you stay with him?” Missy asked. Rick handed her the keys and grabbed Bob’s arm.

“Sure. We’ll meet you outside.” Rick said. He waited until Missy was out of earshot before telling Bob, “You look pale, bud.”

“Don’t let Missy hear you say that.” Bob said as they walked to the doors.

“She’s been really worried about you. All day. I couldn’t get her to eat and she barely drank the tea I got her.”

“Except for some bumps and bruises, I’m fine. I just can’t believe the crash happened. Do mom and dad know what happened?”

“I don’t know. Missy and I were waiting at the counter when an employee took us back to a room and we found out about the problems with the plane. I was too occupied with keeping Missy calm.”

“Thanks, bro. I appreciate it.” Bob said. Reporters came running after them. A security guard stopped them. “Thank heaven. Get me out of here.” Bob said. All of a sudden he just wanted to hold Missy and never let go.

Once in the car and away from the airport, Bob began talking about Paris and the meetings. He talked all the way to the hospital. A nurse made Missy and Rick wait outside. Kerri and both Bob’s dad and Missy’s dad had shown up a short time later.

“How’s Bob? Is he okay?” Jason, Sr asked after he and Rick hugged.

“Doctors are checking him out now. A stewardess let us know that he hit his head pretty hard. He’s got some scratches and bumps and bruises. He talked the entire time over here about the trip.” Rick explained. Missy just hugged her dad and wouldn’t let go.

Kenny and another doctor came out of the examining room about a half hour later.

              “How is he?” Missy asked.

“Well, we want to keep him overnight for observation. He’s experiencing some double vision. We’re taking him up for a CAT scan just to be on the safe side.” Kenny explained.

              “He’ll be okay?” Kerri asked.

“We’ll know more after the CAT scan.” The other doctor said.

“Missy, he’s asking for you. We had to put eye drops in his eyes so he can’t see very well right now so don’t be alarmed that his eyes look all sore and everything, okay?” Kenny said to his sister.

              “Thanks.” She hugged him.

“He’ll be fine. You’re trembling.” Kenny said to her.

“We could have lost him tonight, Kenny. He could have died.” Missy said.

“But he didn’t. Don’t stay too long. An orderly will be up shortly to take him up to the CAT room and then we’ll get him into his own room. Dad, could you please call mom and Jenn and let them know that he’s fine?” Kenny asked. Missy went over to Rick.

“Thank you for being there with me this afternoon.” Missy gave him a hug and then disappeared into the exam room.

“Bob, honey? It’s me. How you doing?”

“Okay. I can’t see too well right now though. How are you?”

“Shaky, but fine. The doctors want to keep you overnight for observation and they’re going to do a CAT scan.”

“Just a precaution. We’ll go look for rings tomorrow okay?” he asked.

“That’s fine, sweetheart. I love you.” Missy said and kissed him on the lips.

“I was so scared, Missy. So scared.” Bob said as she sat on the bed next to him.

“Tell me what happened in the plane.”

“I knew something was wrong before most of the others did. I heard the engine shut off and the pilots trying to restart it. At first, I didn’t think anything of it but then when the stewardesses all gathered up front, I became suspicious. I pulled Katie aside and asked her if one of the engines was out and she said yes. Then they did the emergency landing explanation thing again and Katie asked me to help when we got on the ground. Everyone was scared. And then when we stopped, the adrenaline just said get these people out of here now and I went through and unfastened seatbelts and started helping people to safety while Katie went to check on the staff in the cockpit. The only other time I was this scared was when you were kidnapped.”

“We’re both fine now. You’re going to be just fine.”

“I know that, but it’s so glad to be on the ground and in your arms.” Bob said as Missy wrapped him in hers.

“I’ll never leave you, Bob. In body and in spirit, I’ll always be with you.” Missy replied.

“Missy, it’s time to take him up for a CAT scan. You can see him in room 345 in about an hour.” Kenny interrupted.

“Go get something to eat, Missy. I’ll be fine.” Bob told her.

“Alright, I’ll go home and get you some pjs and your music. I’ll be back. I love you.” Missy told him.

“Merry Christmas!” Kim banged on Missy and Bob’s door Christmas morning a month later.

“Ssshhh... Missy’s still sleeping.” Bob said when he opened the door.

“Last minute wrapping last night?” Kim asked. Bob nodded as he walked back over to the stove and made coffee.

“She did some last minute shopping last night, came home, wrapped it and was so excited I couldn’t get her to calm down.”

              “Why?”

“My dad offered me an office job in Headquarters so I took it. Means more money and now we can afford to move out and be on our own.”

“You two are moving out?” Kim asked.

“Not right away. We gotta look for the right place and everything and we don’t want to be too far from you. C’mere, I have something special for you.” Bob said and went over and grabbed a box.

“This is to thank you for all of your help this past month with Benji, the wedding plans, and being the best sister to Missy. Oh, before I forget. Jessie is coming to visit for a few hours today.”

              “Does Missy know?”

“No. Jessie and her mom wanted it to be a surprise so don’t go blowing it for Missy or your parents.” Bob said.

“You are a stinker! You’re going to shock her silly.” Kim said. “Let me go wake her. It’s a tradition on Christmas morning for me. This will probably be the last time I get to do this.” Kim asked.

“Sure. Take her some orange juice and get her to take her medicine.” Bob said as he handed her a glass of orange juice. “I’ll be up in a few minutes.” Bob said and shooed her out of the kitchen. He took the camcorder out and went up and stood in the hall for a moment.

“Mi...Mi...it’s Christmas! Wake up!” Kim laughed as she jumped on the bed. Bob recorded the whole thing. Missy threw a pillow at Kim and the fight was on. Feathers went everywhere and Bob was laughing. He quickly ran downstairs and put the camcorder on top of the fake fireplace mantle, aiming it at the stairs so that he could get Missy’s reaction to the tree and everything that was underneath it. Kim came down first.

“She’ll be down in a minute. I’m going to go back home. Remember, brunch at 11:30ish.” Kim said and left.

Missy came down soon after and stared at the tree.

“This is going to be the best Christmas ever!” She exclaimed as she ran over to Bob and gave him a huge hug.

“Merry Christmas, darling.” Bob said as he swung her around.

“Merry Christmas, love of my life.” She said. The tea kettle went off just then.

“Go sit down, it’s my turn to take care of you.” Missy said and blocked his way to the kitchen. Bob didn’t argue. Would give him opportunity to film her with the camcorder. Missy fixed their tea and cinnamon rolls and let him have his fun with the camcorder. She gave that to him as an early Christmas present. He gave her a crocheting machine.

“Missy, hon. Look at me for a minute. I need to tell you something.” Bob said as he aimed the camcorder at her. She looked at him.

              “What is it?”

“What if I were to tell you that the Andrews are bringing Jessie over to see you today?” Bob asked her. Her eyes lit up in excitement.

“Jessie’s coming here? Today? How? Why?” she asked as she ran over to him and almost knocked him and the camcorder down.

“Well, Mr. Andrews and I have had this planned for about a week now. Mrs. Andrews really wanted for you to see Jessie instead of just talking to her over the phone and Mr. Andrews felt the same way, so they asked if they could stop by before they went over to Mr. Andrews’ parents house. I said yes, of course.”

“Do my parents know they’re coming over?” Missy asked as she took the camcorder from him and set it down on the table.

“Yup. They’re pretty excited too.” Bob grinned. Missy kissed him passionately. Bob groaned.

“Mmmm, I could get to enjoy this.” He said.

“Don’t get used to it...we’ve got alot of people to see today. Jessie, your family, my family, our family.” Missy explained. “Let’s open presents.” Missy said gleefully and went over to the tree.

“What did you do? Wait until I finally went to bed then came down and put all of this stuff under here. There weren’t this many gifts last night when I went to bed.” Missy stated.

“That’s because half of the stuff came from your parents house. Did you forget about all the stuff you bought as the months rolled by? I’ve been stashing stuff in your parents’ house for the past few weeks and your mom calls up and says `don’t forget all these bags of gifts you two have over here’. So what could I do but go over and get them. Was that okay?” he asked.

“That was fine. But, it’s almost ten thirty and we really should get showered and go over to my folks.” Missy said looking at the clock on the VCR. She went over to Bob. “Know what I want to do?” she asked as she opened up his shirt and kissed his neck.

“A quickie in the shower? You’re unbelievable. I thought we were going to wait until the honeymoon.” He said.

“Dr. Feagel said yesterday that I was 100% better and healthy. That I could make love to my fiancee and even make a baby.” Missy said as she unbuttoned his shirt.

“I can’t think of a better way to inaugurate our first Christmas morning together than to make love with you.” He said as he undid her robe. Clothing went flying as they caressed each other and made their way to the bathroom where they made love for the first time since before the car accident.

“You are absolutely glowing.” Kerri commented when she and Missy captured a moment alone right after Bob and Missy arrived at the house.

“It’s been a wonderful Christmas so far.” Missy replied.

“And it’s about to get better.” Mrs. Nichols said to her daughter, “someone’s just arrived and wants to see you.” She said to her daughter.

“Jessie and her parents are here?” Missy looked at her mom.

“Yup. They just pulled up.” her mother said. Missy excused herself and went to the front door.

“So...did you have a nice Christmas?” Bob asked Missy when they returned home late that night.

“I had a wonderful Christmas except for one thing.” Missy replied. Missy put all the packages down next to the kitchen counter.

“What’s that?” Bob asked. He closed the door and locked it.

“Too much time away from you.” Missy said as she slipped her arms around his neck and kissed him.

“Mmmm...I couldn’t agree more. But, see Christmas isn’t over yet.” Bob said as he returned kisses.

“Oh, no? There’s more?” Missy asked.

“We still have our presents to open. Remember the ones under our own tree?” Bob pointed out. Missy laughed.

“Oh, those.” she laughed. Bob led her over to the couch.

“Well, should we open these or save them for tomorrow?” he asked.

“Depends on what you have in mind.” she replied.

“Sleep...and plenty of it.” Bob said and pushed her back on the couch and made love to her.

“You are so bad.” Missy said a little while later as they laid on the couch, watching the stars and the moon.

“Only showering my love with affection...” he said as he nuzzled her neck.

“And gifts. What did you do? Buy out every store you went to?” she asked.

“No.” he said and pushed her on her back. She giggled.

              “Aren’t you hungry?”

“Not for food.” he said as he caressed her thighs and looked into her eyes.

“How can I refuse you?” Missy said and played the aggressor as they made love yet again.

“Missy? You awake? Mom and I are going to the mall? You coming?” Kim said into the answering machine the next morning.

“Kimmy...she’s still sleeping.” Bob said as he answered the phone.

“Oh...she’s usually the first one up for the day after Christmas shopping spree.”

“Sorry to disappoint you, we were up really late last night having our own little Christmas celebration. Why don’t you and your mom go to the mall without her this year?”

“Boy, things are changing all ready and she’s not even married to you yet.” Kim said angrily and hung up the phone.

“That’s life.” Bob said to himself and rolled over on his other side to wrap his arms around Missy. They slept until noon.

“Wake up, Bob. It’s noon. You’re sleeping the day away.” Missy nudged him off the bed.

“Well, if that wasn’t a rude awakening!” Bob said, shaking the sleep from his eyes.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you were that far over.” Missy laughed and layed on her stomach across the bed. “Good afternoon.” She said and kissed him.

“Mmmm, good afternoon. What are your plans for this afternoon?”

“Putting the computer together and hooking it up. How about you?”

“Just hanging out. Rick and JR will be coming by later to watch some basketball, okay?” he told her.

              “Sure.” Missy said.

“Well, I’m going to go take a shower and face the day. Could you make me some coffee?”

              “Yup, how about some food?”

“Whatever you want to fix. Love you.” Bob said and kissed her.

“Love you too. Thank you for making Christmas so wonderful for me. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me.”

“No, you are the one who chased a cold-hearted man for a year and wore him down, got him to fall hopelessly in love with you, and become your fiancee nine months later. If anyone is lucky, it’s me.” Bob said. Missy got up and put on her robe.

“Either way you look at it, I’d say we’re both lucky. Go on and take your shower. I’ll scrounge something up for lunch.” Missy said and went downstairs.

“Honey, how’s the set-up coming?” Bob asked as Missy begun putting the PC together.

“Getting ready to start installing software. Wanna see what the area looks like?” Missy asked, peeking her head out of the curtain that separated the computer from the rest of the apartment.

“I’ll wait until you are done. I’m going to run out and get some munchies for the game. Need anything?”

“If you’ll pick up some steaks, I’ll grill them for dinner. Get enough for your brothers too.” Missy shouted as he walked to the door. By the time he returned, Missy had loaded all of the applications and some of the games.

“What did you do? Buy out the store?”

“No, the lines in the grocery store were quite long and I ran into a friend from high school, Brandon Justice.”

“I know him. I dated his younger brother, Adam, for a year. What’d you buy?” Missy said as she came out of hiding, so to speak.

“Chips, sodas, diet sodas, a six-pack of beer, wine coolers for you, the steaks, a bottle of sparkling cider, strawberries, whipped cream, peanuts, pistachios, fruit, and this.” Bob said handing her a rose.

“What’s this for?” she asked as she took it from her.

“For letting the guys come over to watch sports with me.”

“Anytime. Go relax, I’ll put this stuff away. I need a break from the computer anyway. Rick is on his way and JR had to make a stop first.” Missy explained. Bob grabbed a bag of chips and a soda and went over and sat down on the couch. Missy had had the country music station on.

“Traffic was unbelievable. Almost as bad as Christmas eve.” he stated as he watched her.

“That’s nothing new. Do you want potatoes or rice with the steaks?” Missy asked.

“Potatoes. I been thinking. Why don’t we go skiing this weekend?” he asked.

“Because we don’t ski.” Missy asked.

              “Wanna learn?” Bob asked.

“Maybe. Corn or green beans or a mix?” Missy asked as she looked in the freezer.

“Mix.” he replied as he answered the knock at the door. It was Kim.

“Hi...nice to see you’re finally awake. Bob, I wanted to apologize for the way I spoke to you on the phone earlier.”

“What happened?” Missy asked as she took the bag that Kim handed her.

“I called early this morning and got huffy with Bob when I found out that you were still sleeping and weren’t coming shopping with me and mom at the mall today.”

“It’s already forgotten, Kim.” Bob said and gave her a hug.

“Why don’t you stay and keep me company? Rick and JR are coming over to watch sports with Bob and I should start dinner. Call mom and tell her you’re going to be down here for awhile. Okay?” Missy said.

              “Sure.”

              Two days before the wedding...

“Missy? It’s Dr. Feagel. I’ve got your test results here.”

              “Yes. And?”

“Congratulations, you’re pregnant and everything is fine.” she said to Missy. Missy squealed with delight.

“Everything’s fine. No complications? Due Date?”

“Everything’s fine and I’d say around September 20th would be your due date. Come see me after your honeymoon.”

“Wait. Is it okay to have sex now?” Missy asked.

              “Up until your eigth month.”

“Your still coming to the wedding and reception, right?’ Missy asked.

“Yes, I’ll be there. Congratulations, Missy. I’m so happy for you.”

“Please don’t let Kenny or my dad try to press you for info. I want to wait until after the honeymoon to tell everyone. And Bob...Bob, I’ll tell right after we’re married.” Missy said.

“I’ll do my best. Take care, Missy.”

“You too, thank you.” Missy said and jumped for joy after she hung up the phone. “My Christmas baby! Wait til I tell your father.” Missy said. “Oh, gosh, I’m gonna be late for the rehearsal dinner!” Missy quickly left the apartment. Bob was pulling in.

“I was just coming to get you. What are you glowing about?” Bob asked.

“In two days I’m going to be Mrs. Robert Caudwell. Nothing could make me happier.” Missy said. Bob helped her into his car and they went off to the rehearsal.

“This is it, sweetie. You’re about to become a married woman.” her mother said as they were getting ready two days later. “You nervous?”

“Scared stiff. But, I’ll survive. How do I look?” Missy asked as she finished putting on the veil.

              “Like a princess.” Kim replied.

“Here’s the flower girl.” Mrs. Andrews said as she knocked on the door.

“Thank you so much. You and Paul are staying, aren’t you?” Missy said when her mother let them into the dressing room.

              “You bet.”

“Mi, you look like my Wedding Barbie.” Jessica said. Everyone laughed.

              “Thank you Jess.”

“The photographer’s ready to take pictures of all the women and the ring bearer.”

“Oh, gosh! Andy!” Jenn gasped and went over to the loveseat to wake him up, careful not to wake Amanda Lynn, her daughter. Five minutes later, Missy and the bridal party were getting pictures taken.

“Daddy, you ready to give me away?” Missy asked her father as they were waiting to walk down the aisle.

“I’ll never give you completely away. I’m so glad you found a man like Bob. I’m very pleased that he’s going to be your husband.” her father said and kissed her on the cheek. “I know he’s going to take very good care of you.”

“...I now pronounce you man and wife. Robert. You may kiss your wife.” the pastor announced. Missy embraced her husband. “I love you, Bob. With all my heart and soul.” Missy said as they kissed. When they parted lips, Missy whispered in his ear, “you’re going to be a daddy.” Bob looked at her as she nodded her head to assure him she was pregnant. As everyone watched, he picked her up and swung her around and laughed. “Sssshh...no one else knows.” Missy warned as he put her down.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, I now introduce Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cauldwell.” everyone stood up and clapped.

At the reception (it was held at the Cauldwells’), the music played, people ate, drank, and danced and Bob just kept looking at Missy. They mingled with everyone, but would glance at each other every once in a while and smile. Then it was time for a toast. Rick gave it.

“Many of you here know the situations Bobbie and Missy have faced individually over the years and then together these past two years. When Bob sat me down and told me that he wanted to ask Missy to marry him, I thought he was nuts. That he was too young, but Missy brings out the best parts of him. He has grown as a person, as a brother, and as a friend since meeting Missy. Missy. Missy, Missy, Missy. You are truly the love of my brother’s life. Through you, he has become such a better person. You’ve both been through some rough times, and now it’s time for your life together to begin anew. Congratulations to you both. Missy, welcome to the family, sis. May your life together live through the end of time.” Rick explained and raised his glass to the newleyweds. Soon it was time for Missy to go up and change into a casual traveling outfit. They were going to DisneyWorld for their honeymoon.

“Mom, daddy. Thank you for today.” Missy said as she bid them good-bye.

“Have fun on your honeymoon. We’ll talk when you get back.” her mother said. Bob practically had to throw her into the limo because she was stopping to say goodbye to everyone. Once they were in the limo and it was on it’s way, Bob turned to her.

“I’ve been dying for hours now to get you alone.” Bob said as he kissed her. “Do you know how happy I am?” he asked.

“I have a feeling but...why don’t you show me.” she said and pulled him into a deep kiss.

“As much as I want to make love to you right now, I want to wait until we get to the hotel. Let’s do this right, okay?” he asked.

“You bet. So you never did tell me how you felt about what I told you earlier at the church.”

“I am so very happy that we’re pregnant. When did you find out? When did you suspect?” Bob asked.

“Last week since I hadn’t gotten my period since before Christmas, I began thinking something was up so I took a home test and it came out positive. I called Dr. Feagel and she fit me in the next day. Two days ago, she called me into her office and told me all the results and that our baby is due around September 20th. This is our Christmas Miracle.” Missy explained everything to him.

“Everything is okay with you? You’ll be able to carry the baby and everything?” Bob asked.

“Dr. Feagel says everything is fine. So...where are we going on our honeymoon?” Missy asked because he never told her.

“Someplace you’ve always wanted to go to.” was all he would tell her. He had her mother pack her suitcases for her the night before while they had gone out for dinner.

“You’re going to have to tell me sooner or later.”

“What makes you think that?” he asked and handed her a glass of sparkling juice.

“You’ll have to wait until we get to the airport, then I’ll tell you.” he said.

“We can’t be going to the airport. It’s the other direction.” she pointed out.

“Okay, I’ll tell you what we’re doing tonight. Tonight...” Bob said and put his glass down to hold her hand, “Tonight, we’re going to stay in the city at the Ritz and then tomorrow we’ll head to the airport and two weeks of fun and romance.”

“Two weeks? How’d you manage two weeks?”

“It’s in my new contract with the Company. Plus I get two additional weeks, sick time, and emergency time, and now that I’m going to be a dad, I’ll even take paternity leave for a month or so.” Bob continued to grin.

“I love you so much, Bob. Thank you for making my dreams come true and for believing in me when I didn’t believe in myself.” Missy turned serious.

“You’re the one who showed me how to open my heart again. How to completely put my trust in another human being. Thank you for loving me.” he replied. “Oh, almost forgot something.”

              “What?”

“Your dad handed this to me before we left the reception and said for me to play it when we got on the road.” Bob said and took a vcr tape from a bag and put it in the videotape.

“Good, you two must be on the way to your honeymoon and the beginning of a wonderful life together. Well, Mr. Nichols and I have a surprise for the both of you. Melissa, dear, you have just inherited your grandfather’s Victorian house and a very substantial amount of money and stocks. Now, Bob, don’t get pigheaded about this. Missy didn’t know about it. Kenny was to have the house, but knew how much it meant to Missy so he gave it to her, but each of the children inherit alot of money when they marry or turn 25, I can’t help it if my family was rich, but I always believed to live happyily with my Kevin and we compromised. My inheritance from my father is gathering interest and will be used for retirement for both Kevin and myself. Kevin works because he loves it, not because he has to, same with Kenny. Our wealth is not known publicly because we choose not to publicize it. Now, kids, when you get back. We’ll sit down and talk more about this, but, lately, I’ve been thinking about you, Missy. It’s obvious that you love the store very much and now that you’re mending nicely, I want you to think about maybe opening a few more. And Bob, your parents are so proud of you. Kevin and I want you to think about going back to school. You have the makings of a great president of a company or even over us. This is not a joke or a dream. It’s real. Your honeymoon is being paid by us. No ifs and or buts and when you get back we’ll talk more.” Missy’s mother explained.

“What! We’re rich?” Missy disbelieved. Bob was speechless.

“Did you enjoy your honeymoon, sweetheart?” Bob asked Missy when they were up in the air and on the way back home.

              “Every moment.” Missy said.

“Including the morning sickness?” Bob teased.

“Even that because this is our baby, our family and the morning sickness is worth it.” Missy kissed her husband.

“Did you really have fun at Disney World?”

“Yes, I did. And just think, in 5 years or so, we’ll be able to take our son or daughter down there.”

“We’re going to be so happy. I just know it.” Missy said.

“Honey, we’re home.” Bob said two hours later.

“I’m sorry, I dozed off.” Missy yawned.

“It’s okay. I love watching you sleep.” Bob said. They walked arm in arm into the terminal. Rick and Kerri were waiting for them with a big Welcome Home, Newleyweds banner.

“Remember, no one but your parents are to know about the pregnancy.” Bob whispered in her ear. They had discussed it and decided to wait until after her next check-up to tell everyone else.

“Welcome home.” Kerri said as she hugged both of them. Missy noticed that she was wearing the engagement ring again.

“Thanks. How are things back here?” she asked, meaning between Kerri and Rick.

“Resolved and much better.” Rick said as he hugged Missy.

              “Good, I’m glad.”

“Kerri, why don’t you and Missy go get the car while Rick and I get the luggage.” Bob suggested, looking at Missy knowingly.

“Sure, c’mon, Missy. You can tell me all about your honeymoon, starting with where did you go?” the women walked arm in arm to the car.

“We went to DisneyWorld after we spent a night at the Ritz.” Missy said.

              “DisneyWorld!”

“Kerri, it was the best time I’ve ever had. Now, I had fun when we went back in highschool, but this time I was with my husband and it was so dreamy and Bobbie was Mr. Romantic.” Missy blushed.

“Oh, I’m so happy for you.” Kerri squealed. They got in the car and drove over to baggage claim to pick up the men.

“So tell me about these past two weeks without me.”

“Well, after we got home from the reception, Rick told me we needed to talk. He was so serious, so we changed out of the fancy duds, turned off the ringer to the phone, grabbed some sodas and sat down next to the patio doors and talked the night away. I told him that I loved him alot and that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him, but I’m not ready for marriage. It’s not fair to him if I said “Okay, I’ll be your wife, but my career comes before you.” I explained that the store is alot for me right now and that I’m not ready to start a family, so Rick asked if maybe we could hold off on the kids part for a few years. I was so afraid to ask him that so when he asked me I was shocked. He said that he felt we both would need to adjust to a two-career household and having children right now would not be right for us. He wasn’t expecting me to give up my career to be a housewife. Boy was I relieved!” Kerri explained as they waited for the guys.

“Rick, Missy’s rich.” Bob blurted out as they waited for the luggage.

“What! That’s obsurd!” Rick laughed it off.

“I’m serious. She and I both found out right after we left for our honeymoon.” Bob said.

              “How rich?”

“That we don’t know. But we do know that the Victorian house over on Highland Avenue, that’s Missy’s.”

“Oh, wow. All this time you two were struggling to get by.” Rick shook his head in disbelief.

“Yeah, but we learned how to budget our money and how not to take it for granted. And we love each other for who we are and not our money. They grabbed the luggage off the turntable and put it on a cart.

“Here they come.” Kerri said and popped the trunk.

“Thanks for coming to pick us up so late.” Missy said once the men were in the car.

“No problem. We had nothing better to do anyway.” Rick teased.

Rick and Kerri dropped them off and pulled around into the drive. Bob traditionally carried his bride over the threshold once he unlocked the door. Kerri and Rick gave them a few minutes alone before coming up behind them.

“So are you going to stand there and kiss until the sun is shining or what?” Rick teased again.

“You know just how to embarass someone, dear.” Kerri said and playfully hit him.

“No fighting in the house children.” Missy warned.

“Would either of you like something to drink? I know both moms made sure the house was stocked and spotless for our return.” Bob said and went over to the fridge

“No, thanks, bro. We’ve got to get home and get some sleep. We’re leaving for a ski trip tomorrow for the weekend. We’ll see you on Monday? Okay?” Rick asked.

“Sure. We’ll have dinner next week.” Bob said.

“Call me when you get back, Kerri, and we’ll set it up.” Missy said.

“I’ll walk you both out.” Bob said

“Goodnight, guys. Thanks again.” Missy said and plopped down on the couch. A few minutes later Bob came back with Benji. Benji was so excited to see Missy, he jumped on the couch and began licking her face.

“Ooooh, I knew there was someone I missed.” Missy said and hugged the dog.

“It’s good to be home.” Bob said as he sat down next to her. They fell asleep with the TV on, relaxing on the couch. When Missy woke the next morning, she slipped an afghan over Bob and quietly went upstairs to take a shower and change clothes. He was still sleeping when she came back down so she left him a note that she went to see her mom.

“Hello? Mom?” Missy said as she opened the door.

“Hi, honey! Welcome home! Where’s Bob?” her mother greeted her with a warm hug and a smile.

“He’s still sleeping. Did I come at a bad time?” Missy asked.

“No. I’m watching Amanda Lynn and Andy for a little while while Jenn gets some shopping done”

              “Where’s Andy?”

“Watching cartoons in the den while I clean up the kitchen. And Amanda Lynn is sound asleep in her car seat. Come on in and sit down. I’ll make some tea.”

“Thanks, ma. And thank you for cleaning up the house and stocking the fridge. It was really nice to come home to a well-stocked home.” Missy said.

“Your welcome. So tell me about the honeymoon.” her mother exclaimed.

“I had the best time ever. We had alot of fun and alot of romance and we even got to meet a few stars.” Missy declared.

“Really! Like who?” her mother asked.

“Sean Banks from Grundy Hill and Matthew Krell from Airy Mountain City.”

              “Really! Amazing!”

“Did you know that Sean is from Kennedy Circle? And that he and Kenny went to college together?”

“What were they doing down there?” Mrs. Nichols handed her daughter a mug of hot water.

“Public appearances. We met them and got our pictures taken with them. Remember the time I asked you why he looked so familiar? He came home for Thanksgiving with Kenny the one year.”

              “B? He’s B?”

“Yup. Without all the frizzy hair.” Missy said.

“He cleans up good.” her mother laughed.

              “Yeah he does.”

“Well, your wedding dress is pressed and boxed. Your father picked it up yesterday. I put it upstairs in your room, which, by the way, is also being used to store your wedding presents.” her mother hinted.

“Oh, yeah...almost forgot.” Missy shook her head in disbelief. “I’ve never seen so many gifts for a wedding.”

“I wonder how many items you have duplicates and triplicates of?”

“I don’t want to deal with it today. Today, I just want to relax and catch up on sleep.” Missy said.

“Has Bob had any more nightmares about the plane crash?” her mom got serious.

“No...I think it’s safe to say that they’re gone.” Missy said. Andy came running out into the kitchen.

“Aunt Mi. You’re home!” he declared with delight.

“How’s my favorite nephew.” Missy gave him a big hug.

“I been good, right gramma?” Andy looked at his grandmother.

“Absolutely. Now, go one back to the den. It’s nap time.”

              “But I’m a big boy.”

“Even big boys need their sleep.” Missy butted in. There was a knock at the door. It was Mr. Andrews and Jessica.

“Jessie, Paul. It’s nice to see you.”

“Hi, Missy. We need to talk.”

“Jessie, why don’t you go on in to the den and play?” Mrs. Nichols asked. “Paul, can I get you something to drink?”

“No thank you. My wife passed away last night. She had a brain aneurisym. I was wondering if Jessie could stay with you or your mom for a few hours while I go do what has to be done?” Paul asked.

“Of course we will. Does Jessie know what’s going on?”

“She knows that momma is in heaven. She doesn’t really understand, but she knows.” Paul replied. “Thank you for watching her on such short notice.”

“Is there anything else we can do for you?” Missy asked.

“Not right now. Thank you. I’ll be back as soon as I can.” Paul said and left.

“I’m going to go back home and see if Bob is up yet.” Missy said and left the house before her mother could see her crying.

“Missy? What’s wrong?” Bob asked as soon as she opened the door. He had been up for a few minutes.

“Mrs. Andrews died yesterday.” Missy replied as she sat down on the nearest chair. “Jessie doesn’t have a mother.” Missy put her head in her hands. Bob went over to her.

“I’m so sorry, honey. So sorry.” Bob said and held her and let her cry. The phone rang a short time later. It was Missy’s mom.

“Bob? Jessie’s on her way down to you.” Marilyn said into the phone.

“Thanks, ma.” Bob hung up the phone.

“Jessie’s on her way down. Why don’t you go up and wash your face real quick?” he suggested.

“Thanks, honey. I love you.” Missy kissed him and went upstairs.

“Jessie, hi, sweetie! How are you?” Bob asked as he opened the door. Benji was right next to him.

“Hi, Mr. Bob. Is Mi okay? I know daddy told her about mommy.” Jessie said frankly.

“C’mon in for yourself and see.” Bob opened the door for her and in she walked.

“Mi? Mi?” Jessica raised her voice just a little.

“Here I am.” Missy said and walked down the stairs, taking a seat on the next to last one. “You okay, sweetie?” she asked. Jessie climbed right onto Missy’s lap.

“Mommy’s gone and daddy’s so sad. I want mommy to come back.” Jessie stated as she leaned against Missy.

“Mommy can’t come back. She’s with God now and she’s watching over you right now and always will.” Missy said.

“I’ll never see mommy again, will I?’ Jessie asked.

“Someday you will, when God wants you with him. But right now, your daddy needs you and me and Bob need you and nana and poppop and Andy, we all need you.”

“Mommy loved you alot. I love you too.” Jessie said and hugged Missy and began to cry.

“Aw, sweetie, it’s gonna be okay. You’ll see.” Missy said and let Jessie lay up against her.

“She’s asleep, Missy.” Bob said a little while later, “let me take her.” Bob said and took Jessie out of Missy’s hands. He put her on the couch and covered her with an afghan.

“She’s a remarkable little girl.” Missy remarked.

“Just like you. It’s starting to snow out. I’m going to go make sure we have enough salt in case we get a bad storm. Try calling Paul. See if he’s home and if he needs anything.” Bob said.

              “Okay, Bob?” she said.

“Yeah?” he turned to look at her. She walked over and put her arms around him.

              “Thanks.”

              “Anytime, Babe.”

“Thank you for watching Jessie for me. My parents won’t be in until late tonight and my mother-in-law is really devastated.” Paul returned an hour later. Jessie was still sleeping.

“Paul, are you going to be okay. You and Jessie are welcome to stay here. Jessie can sleep up at the house in my sister’s room and we have a spare room with a bed. According to my dad, the roads are starting to ice over.”

“I really should get Jessie to her own bed. I wrote down all the information on the viewing and funeral for you. I hope you and your family will be there and you’ll come to the house afterwards?” Paul asked.

“Paul, we’ll be there.” Bob stated. Missy and Paul hugged.

“Thanks.” Paul said. Missy and Bob walked Paul and Jessie out to the car and then went up to her parents house.

“Missy! You’re home! I’ve missed you.” Kim said and ran to hug her sister.

“Easy, Kim.” Bob said sternly. Missy looked at him.

              “What’s wrong?” he asked.

“Nothing, Mrs. Andrews died and I spent all afternoon holding Jessie.” Missy covered for Bob. He almost spilled the beans there for a second.

“Oh, I’m sorry. Is Jessie okay?”

“She slept for an hour or so and was quiet when she left. Where’s dad?”

“Emergency surgery. Jenn’s upstairs feeding Amanda Lynn and Kenny should be over soon. He went home to shower and change and pack some clothing for everyone in case they get snowed in here.”

              “Smart move. And mom?”

“She went up to the attic for the air beds.”

“In that case, I’d better go help her.” Bob said.

              “So how’s AJ?”

“Dreamy. Hopefully the storm won’t be too bad so we can go to the movies tomorrow afternoon.” Kim answered.

“Sounds like fun.” Missy said and sat down in the nearest chair.

              “You okay?” Kim asked.

“I’m fine. Just really tired. I didn’t sleep well last night and with watching over Jessie today, I didn’t get to take a nap.” Missy claimed.

“When are you going to finally be better?” Kim asked.

“What do you mean? I was given a clean bill of health before the wedding. You know how I get when I don’t get enough sleep. I’m not sick or hurt Kim, I’m perfectly fine. I swear.” Missy said.

“I hope so, because I miss the stuff we use to do, the bickering we use to do, the fun we use to have.”

“I’m sorry, Kim. I really am, and I miss them too, but lives are changing. I’m married now. I’m not saying that we won’t ever do those things again, because we will, just maybe not as often.” Missy said. Her mother and Bob came in.

“Missy, you okay? You look pale?” Bob said.

“Hardly any sleep is finally catching up with me. And I’m hungry.”

“Good, you’ll both stay for dinner. I made a nice salad and a huge potroast. I’m not taking no for an answer.”

“When will dinner be ready?” Bob asked.

              “An hour or so.”

“Ok, love, let’s go.” Bob said and scooped her up.

              “Where we going?”

“You’re going to go veg out in the den with a sleeping Andy. Kim, you coming?” Bob asked.

“I’m going to help mom finish dinner.” Kim said.

“We’ll talk more later, Kim, okay?” Missy asked.

              “You bet.” Kim promised.
